Hi

I am playing around with video from FZ35 and have a few problems I hope someone here can assist.

1. no THUMBNAIL/preview pic icon when browsing files using native Vista Home explorer window.

I have loaded the K-Lite package (full) and the files do play and thumbnails display in PICASA.

2. Picasa Web Albumn bad for .mts playback

The .mts files play great on my pc in both Picasa and the Media Classic player but when I upload them (without converting) to Picasa Web Albumn .. YUCK. Terrible. I am testing smugmug and phanfare for online sharing as well, neither accept .mts ...

WHAT IS THE BEST CONVERSION for .mts with minimal quality loss forL
A) online sharing sites
B) to create a cd to give the videos to family?

Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

Panny's AVCHD-Lite format is not yet recognized or handled by most software. You can process it using AVIsynth, which will frameserve into all the major video editors. However, not everybody has experience frameserving using AVIsynth :(

A technical discussion of what works, and a dissection of exactly how AVCHD-Lite actually is constructed can be found in this discussion I initiated recently at VideoHelp:

oh my goodness .. so far the AVCHD video situation is a nightmare.

I thought I was a techie .. but not so much if I have to do all these gyrations just to view/upload/make dvd from AVCHD!!

+ I downloaded the k-lite software and it does allow viewing of the mts files and makes thumbnails in Picasa.
  • cant upload them in this format .. cant copy off to cd/dvd
I installed PhotoFunStudio .. no luck AT ALL
  • it doesn't even see the mts files .. no matter what I do
ANYONE have a novice techie solution besides an additional $90 software (Sony)

My goals - take AVCHD videos for the compressed sixe
View them on pc
Upload to smug mug or Phanfare & copy off to cd/dvd:

so need to easily convert without loss of quality .. the native mts file really produces a nice video and is so much smaller than the mpeg.. I got this camera as much for the video as pics (I know this is not a popular idea but it worked will with the Canon S5 except for large video size)

Thanks in advance .. to whoever can help me make this work

AVCHD - no nightmare anymore:

-Free KMPlayer plays MTS files without installing any additional codecs on PC

-Free HandBrake (v0.9.3) converts MTS files to MP4 (select: H.264 codec, 25 FPS, 3000 kbps for Video and AAC codec 128 kbps for Audio) - acceptable loss of quality, at 1/3 file size

-For DVD mastering (MTS files) use free Dvdflick program (v1.3.0.7)

-You can upload MTS files to YouTube

If you don't want to do any "fancy" video editing (ala Sony Vegas) and just want to get your .mts videos up, an alternative is to convert your .mts to a format your upload site (e.g. Picassa, Youtube) likes. For these conversions I've been using WinFF. Its simple to use, runs well with little user input, and is based on the well known FFmpeg. Handbrake is another to try (as mentioned by others here).

PhotofunStudioHD will allow you to cut up your video and paste sections together (but no transitions like fades are available). So its possible to do some simple edits, then run it through WinFF, Handbrake, or any other transcoder.

For simple viewing of .mts files, I've tried tons of AVCHD-Lite-compatible players. My favorites are Media Player Classic Home Cinema Edition and Mirillis Splash. There are no external codecs to load, they are standalone players, so that simplifies things.

oh pheww thanks for the sw suggestions .. guess I will start playing ..

I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR POSTS!!!!!

Yep, now the fun begins. I might add that I use Youtube because there is a large community. Videos I post seem to play back well (might depend on where you live, what kind of internet connectivity you have, etc.). Some of my friends prefer Vimeo and Exposureroom for hosting their videos. Some of us have multiple accounts.

Its also possible to take an .mts file and just upload it straightaway to Youtube, no conversion with WinFF, Handbrake, etc. required.

I don't make DVD to give to friends so no tips there, I'm PC-based. If your friends don't mind viewing on a PC, then you can burn onto a CD a copy of whatever Windows Player you like, plus your video in whatever format is compatible with the player.

Going back to your original post, dirt simple example would be:

1. No editing of .mts.
2. Upload .mts directly to Youtube, etc.
3a. Burn Media Player Classic Home Cinema or Splash on CD.
3b. Burn your .mts video clips on the same CD.

Me, I have fun editing with Sony Vegas, but it takes time. It can output the final video in tons of different formats that the video sites like, and that can be played with many players. An easy way to go is have Vegas output in .wmv for upload and for playing on PC.

Well I have been playing with several of the suggested video players and converters and thought I would share a few notes.

I downloaded Windows Live Photo Gallery & Windows Live Movie Maker (for Vista) and have been pleasantly surprised with both programs functionality and user friendliness.

WLPG = plays .mov, .mts .wmv
mts have NO thumbnail display :(

WLMM = plays .mov, .mts .wmv
mts have NO thumbnail display :(
It converts video to .wmv, various quality settings available.
It also has plug ins to allow for upload to Youtube, Smugmug etc
AND if you setup a WL account .. you get 25gb for photo sharing online FOR FREE.

Picasa = plays .mts .mov .wmv AND DISPLAYS the thumbnail

KMPlayer = can not get it to open .mts,
plays .movs and .wmv
also does NOT display thumbnails when selecting file to open

Media Player Classic = plays .mov, .mts, .wmv
also does NOT display thumbnails when selecting file to open

I haven't tried Handbrake YET ..

I don't know if there is any difference but .m2ts uploaded to youtube chokes when you try to play them. It plays fine for a couple of seconds then chokes.

There must be a problem with m2ts format as Vimeo won't even accept them.

Hmmm, interesting. It's Sony HD camcorders format. Why there is no one, unified standart.

Don't know if it's of use, but I've settled on the free AVCHD converter from koyote, and using it to convert into MPG2. http://www.koyotesoft.com/indexEn.html
Vimeo member 'MJ Peg' says that Koyote's convertor screws up the sound
http://www.vimeo.com/groups/avchdlite/forumthread:8093

and recommends the convertor 'Prism', I've followed the advice and must say it does work well for me too.

I've used a divx convertor to convert the .mts or msts files to divx (.mkv extender) and also to 'splce' mutliple mts file into one video.

To have any luck with the photFUNstudio, you have to first AQUIRE them off the original card to your PC. Then you can make (regular) DVDs that will play in a blu ray player.

I also use the freeware koyote conversion software (mentioned and linked to in another message on this thread) to convert to several different formats (most commonly I use .WMV) from the .mts or .m2ts formats. Works like a charm and makes the videos MUCH easier to share.

I've a question.
Is any difference between mts and m2ts video files.
Not really. The .MTS extender is what the camera uses when it creates the files, the M2TS extender is what you get when you aquire the videos from the card using photoFUNstudio. They're the same except for that extender.

Do you get thumbnail pics of the .mts files in the Prism program?
No, just a list of file names and details, but that's all you need. Just drag-n-drop into Prism the clips you want to convert, and hit the button... converted clips will appear in the folder of your choice. That's all it's for.

There is a player if you really need it :
