Olympus E-P1 vs Panasonic GF1 vs Leica X1

Also from what I am reading the X1 has a fixed lens.

If that is the case they really aren't competing against each other unless you will solely use the GF1 or E-P1 with one prime lens and never change lenses.

You won't know which one is best until they are all tested with their respective lenses. If the 24mm f2.8 lens on the Leica is anything like their M mount 24 elmarit it will be uber sharp with pretty high contrast.
Three micro four-thirds in not too distant future. All under $1000 (hopefully).

DPReview should have an comparison of the three.

I am unsure which one is best in terms of IQ.

Edit: Leica X1 (most probably) has an APSC sensor.

All of this comparison is moot until 9/9/09. Until then we won't know for certain what the X1 is, if it even exists.

Before the Canon G11 was announced, rumours from 'trusted sources' said that it would have a CMOS sensor, OLED screen, 28-140 zoom range, and a number of other key features that never materialized.

I'm as excited by these potential new cameras as anyone. But heck, comparing cameras on the basis of wispy rumours is useless.

This might be going off topic, but if the supposedly leaked photos of the X1 are true, I just don't get it , a hyper expensive fixed focal length lens, and OMG that grip! I can't believe that such masters of camera design could come up with that monstrosity. It has to be a faked leak.

It would just make so much more sense for Leica to release a rebadged GF1.

That (IMO ugly) grip in the purported X1 picture looks like a bolt-on one (see the thumbwheel at the bottom?) and has a similar design to the one available for the D-Lux 4.

Nice comparing the probably 10.000$ price Leica that might be fixed lens (more akin to Sigma DP2) to the 1000$ system cams :)

Well, the GF1 sure have me thinking... But I doubt the Leica X1 (or any Leica) ever will... I will rather have a better car and at the same price there is no choice for me...

The $10k is what you would expect for the FF M9 (though I think it is pre-ordering for 5500 euro), not a crop camera with a fixed lens. $2k at most... but even at $1k I doubt they could move many. From the picture it is clear this isn't a rangefinder (whoops), just a large-sensor compact with a prime lens (DP1, DP2, or EP1 + superglue)

The 10k$ was a "better overdo it" guestimate... Still, comparing Leica to anything consumer based is a far fetch, even getting old leica lenses 2nd. hand is expensive...

One can only hope that they produce so much better cams as to justify the price tags (Their lenses are superb, I have one) but that is not really my concern, as there are alot of things on my wishlist before a Leica...

the sp1 with a superb foveon sensor and a brilliant and supershapr lens it's 340 euro....if i need a camera like this sigma is the rela choiche...this leica will cost 2000 for the name.

leica will be the next player to say go go....after the crazy price ofthe s system the crazy price of the m9 the crazy price of the x1.

I have never owned a DSLR or expensive camera (I have been a point-and-shoot user all my life). I just thought that X1 might be under $1000. I got super-excited and thought how it would be to compare the two.

If it is a fixed lens, then it is not very useful. If if it super-expensive, then it is pointless. Most people who would be willing to spend that kind of money probably are professionals and would not mind bulk.

You should see the number of amateurs willing to plonk down major cash for the latest toy/muse/instrument. Just look at flickr and take note of the people who do not appear to be pros, but own M8's, Oly E-P1's, Pana G1's, Pana GH1's, Ricoh GRD III's, all at the same time.

In the old days you might pay about $1000 for a camera.

If you shot a 1000 rolls of film in 3 years, film and processing might add another $15,000.

So your price for the camera and the sensor was about $16,000.

Therefore, $2,000 really isn't that bad of a deal.

Even if you factor in the price of your computer, software and an external hard drive, still about 1/2 the price of the film version over 3 years.

(3 years later possible time to upgrade? Start all over.)
