I have recently switched from Canon to Nikon, which means i have a speedlight580EX leftover, I'm using a D3 with an SB900, what i would like is to use the 580EX remotely(controlled by the TTL of the SB900), instead of buying a second SB900, is this possible, I know the TTL will be a problem but can i use it in manual wireless???

Run a test. Put the 580 in remote and set it to manual mode. Put the SB900 to Master mode, set it to manual and fire the camera. See if the SB900 will trigger the 580.

or sell/trade that 580EX for one (or more) sb600, and enjoy full iTTL control.

And the nights when the living room was on the lawn:
Constant quarrelling, the childish fits,
And our clothes in a pile on the ottoman;
All the slander and doublespeak
Were only foolish attempts to show you did not mean
Anything but the blatant proof
Was your lips touching mine in a photobooth.'

I have 580EX too and this hasn't worked for me - also I've heard after this that the Canon 580EX and II version are not responding to anything less then another 580EX or 580EX II, so nothing else would trigger this than only radio trigger or cables but I think it worth better selling and buying a used flash - whatever can you get for your 580EX - probably a used SB800? It should be good enough too, SB900 has only few minors better than SB800, so for second flash it would be ideal.

Not standalone. (I use both systems).

You can buy a plain optical slave trigger (e.g. FlashZebra) to trigger the 580EX, but you will lose TTL. I agree with those that say sell the 580EX and buy a SB-600.

Thanks for your replies, I will sell the 580EX, and properly buy a SB800 instead...

Good luck on finding an SB800. Used ones are selling for almost $100 more than when they were new.
