A simply defective unit or an indication of the quality of Gorillapods in general?

I had been contemplating getting one of these for a while. But I held off because, to be honest, the look of them doesn't necessarily instill confidence. But after seeing stunts like this

I was feeling more confident about a purchase. it really is too bad that things ended so poorly. I really did have plans to use the Gorillapod Focus to capture some long exposure of New York City like this one

Oh well, I guess it's back to the drawing board. Any suggestions on alternatives to the Joby Gorillapod Focus?

Mine did the same thing, so it's not a one-off. I'm returning it.

get another gorillapod, but not the focus? they are still much more portable than tripods, if that's what you want...

Thanks for the replies, I'm looking into possibly getting one of the clamps you suggested.

Oh well, live and learn I guess ...

Update ...

Peter from Joby contacted me via my blog.

I must say I am extremely extremely impressed with Joby's customer service. I never expected any response at all. Much less that they would send me a free Gorillapod Focus.

Joby is sending me a new Gorillapod Focus to replace the broken unit, free of charge.
