While I can sequentially number my files by changing the default setting (#29) on the Nikon, I don't seem to be able to see this change on the camera "counter" at all. This makes the change unusable for projects like memory mates where the only way to keep track of kids is to number them using the camera counter. Am I overlooking something?

You know, I was thinking the same thing yesterday. I had a client in and did some head shots. I played them back thru a video input on a tv monitor and the numbers on the frame and the file numbers don't jive. Though I haven't checked for sure, I think you have to arrow over to get to one of the other exif windows to get the actual file number. I'll be checking it out tomorrow.

Like you, I'm curious why Nikon would have two different exposure numbering systems. To make matters worse, If you use Capture and the camera gets reset. If you import the files from your CF card, you might have two jobs intermingled. I had that happen yesterday.... Pretty bizarre if you ask me.

One possibility is to simply use PS to print contact sheets which will show the number and the photo in miniature and then by comparing them to your sheet of names you can number the names accordingly.
