Hi, new here and need help on two issues.

1. My A100 just died from getting wet. Looking at the A700, but with all the rumors of new models, should I wait a bit to see what comes out? I have a nice collection of lenses so am looking to stay in the Sony APS-C family.

2. I have a SAL 500F8 that comes with the two removable filters. The little holding screw/spring that keeps them in the lens has come off of both filters.

Does anyone know if these can be repaired or if the whole filters need to be replaced (they are in excellent condition otherwise)

Thanks

I would wait, unless I needed the camera for a specific purpose. There's hardly any doubt that the A850 wiil have an APS-C function like that of the A900.

From what I've read, those filters are hard to find, and expensive if and when you do, so maybe you should try some kind of repair.

Not sure about your second point but as regards the A700 I'd probably wait a few weeks til the new announcements are made (I've heard Early September). Then you will be able to make a more informed decision and won't regret it if the new camera has some killer feature you wanted.

Then I'll give you the opposite advise: a700 is a great camera, it has it's issues, but none the less a great camera. As it seems to be going you can probably get the a700 to a good price now.

If you don't have specific needs for liveview, full frame and/or video, then I would suggest you get the a700 cheep, it would be a big step up from the a100. The good and the bad about a700 is very well known - the upcoming will be "untested" for a periode, and then see how the new models evolve.

Your filters are broken. Its a really bad design they used on those filters. I had to replace mine twice, once at full cost, the other at half. The filter are $98.00 USA dollars! I keep the new in the box and I have the broken one on my lens with black tape. You can't see it and I don't have to worry about it breaking again. Remember, you must have the filters in the lens or else it will shoot out-of-focus.

I'd get the A700. It's being heavily discounted now and any replacement will be significantly more expensive. Also a replacement probably won't be available for a couple of months so it's not starter if you want to take photos in the near future.

In regards to your missing filter, I have read on this forum - with test pictures included - that you really do not need it (the clear one). Just stick some black electrical tape over the slot. With diaphragm 8, and the high shutter speeds available, I never had to use the darkening filter - so there is hardly any use for it.

I'd wait a bit.

The a500/550 could well be of interest even if they aren't a700 replacements. And in any casse, the a700 should see a price drop with the upcoming announcement.

The question of whether you should buy now or wait is debatable, so I'll answer the second part.

I have the Minolta 500mm f/8, and I had a problem with the shaft of the hold down knob break. as it is made from a thin plastic. Looking at it, it would appear that it would be easy to repair it if the parts were available separately. There is a knob with the shaft, a spring, and a metal pin the goes in a hole in the shaft and which keeps the knob/shaft from falling out. On, and there is the filter and the housing.

However, from my experience the parts are not available individually, you have buy the whole assembly, which is a shame.

Thanks for all the responses.

I'll wait a while to see what Sony actually releases.

As for the lens filters, I can get by with the electrical tape holding the filter in, but it shouldn't have to be that way for a product that costs over $700.00.

They broke so easily, I see no poinyt in investing another hundred bucks each only to have it happen again.
