This forum is getting worse. Can the moderator do something about it?

If you post meaningless threads, plenty of other folks chime in and the thread hits the 150 maximum, then dies. If you try to post on-point comments, or, perish the thoughts, links to what you think are helpful resources, folks start hitting the complaint button and if you're really lucky, your thread will be removed.

Then, on special occasions, there's a big blow-out, with lots of intense language being tossed back and forth, some people get upset and leave, or make believe like they're leavin' and never-ever-comin' back... It's like a big Baptist church, really, but without the potlucks. And I get to say that because I've attended plenty of them -- Baptist churches and potlucks, that is.

I am absolutly agree with you. Some posters here are very experienced & talented photographer which share valuable experience & technic with peoples like me new to photography. I am very greatful those peoples & Dpreview which make us avaible these forums. All peoples(99.9%) from all forum are very sobers & genuinely discuss & share their opinion. Above you mentions peoples are very few. I am also deeply herted by them but it big mistake to reply their harsh remarks. It is better way to ignore them. Once again thanks to all people of these forums for sharing their valuable experience, opinions & photos

Such is the way with online forums. I rather enjoy a good debate but personal attacks and silly posts that don't add to anyone's understanding are annoying. I don't much care if you've misspelled a word. I'm solely interested in the content of a post.

I think the best course is to simply ignore those posts and posters. If the trolls and fire starters are ignored, they do not receive the attention they so desperately seek and will eventually find some other place for their childishness.

There remain many people who seek to learn, share knowledge and discuss our common interest in photography. Those people continue to make this a worthwhile forum.

What I meant was that getting angry at some post is not the most productive way to enjoy this forum. Coming to here is not a waste of time. Posting here is not a waste of time. Getting angry at some post is a waste of time and energy. Got it?
DPR is big; of course you will come across people who react differently. If someone gets angry, you should not let that anger upset you, you should be bigger than that. If you work in a big department with a big staff, you can't expect to have all nice people around you. It is up to you to figure out how cohabit with them and not let that attitude rub on you. We do not live in a perfect world with perfect people.

I looked at your profile and it says you've been here all of 4 months! You remember back when it was better? I've been here for a few years and remember back when I joined some were complaining of the same thing. It's really no better or worse than it's ever been. Sometimes you just have to have thick skin and let things roll off.
Have a good day.

I used to enjoy this forum. Getting great advice. Seeing some of the great pictures people took.
Nothing has changed here.
Recently, it is getting worse and worse. People personally attrack one another. Someone ask some innocent questions and get slammed. Or someone purposely start meaningless threads (the stupid "paparazzo" thread comes to my mind) It is a complete waste of time!!!
So, why do you read threads that are a complete waste of your time? :O
BTW, I have both Canon and Nikon cameras. Going to both forums regularly to get great info. It seems to me that the D90 forum is getting out of control. I do not see this kind of problem in the canon forum (but I could be wrong..)
Yes, you could be...
Please, show some respect.
I have been using electronic forums/boards for more than 30 years now, there is nothing that stands out in this forum.

Wherever people get together to express their personal opinions it is totally impossible to avoid friction, especially on the Internet since a person can hide behind his/her electronic posting device. ;)
If you don't like the thread, just ignore it.
Well, that's exactly the advice I was going to give you! :D

YOu don't understand why your post was perceived as one more negative post on this forum?

Because you're title -- where are the moderators -- sounds like you were trying to get people banned. I'm guessing that it was just a figure of speech.

Coming here from the Pentax forum it is quite a shock. I think that that is because the Nikon forums are divided up such that the more expensive and theoretically professional cameras are in different forums, so the experienced, seasoned, and one might hope calm and wise Nikon photographers are not posting here. Sometimes it also seems that this means that everyone with a d90 gets to swagger around here like they're the King of the Forum.

Agreed. I thought it was just me noticing that there seem to be a lot of personal attacks, and RTFM type comments lately.
What is wrong with reading the fine manual?
While there are lots of experienced photogs in here, this board also caters to D40/60/D5000 and now D3000 which are models targeted at first time DSLR owners. These people may genuinely need help and want to learn.
OK, I see ... so the others have to read the fine manual for them! :|
I sure wouldn't want to be a new Nikon owner checking out this board :(
I would do it all over again! :D
I'm not sure whether the board for infrastructure accomodates it but it might be a good feature to have some stickies/FAQs for people to read before asking questions.
But there is! The trouble is that (almost) nobody reads it!
Right here: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/rules.asp?forum=1034

Especially this point:
  • New posters - Before you ask a question please check to see if someone else has asked it before, ask our search engine first.
How many times per week that people ask how to clean their low-pass filters (sensors)?
How many times per week that people ask about over-/underexposure?
How many times per week that people ask how to post pictures to the forum?

On top of that, there is a pretty useful glossary on this website:
http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary

I dare new users to post a question that has never been posted before! :D

Or someone purposely start meaningless threads (the stupid "paparazzo" thread comes to my mind) It is a complete waste of time!!!

Please, show some respect. If you don't like the thread, just ignore it.
If we are expected to ignore your thread if we don't like it, then why can't you ignore the threads that you don't like?

You've been in this forum what...4 months maybe? You of course have the liberty to start any thread that you like, but to speak as if you've been here for years by commenting "it is getting worse and worse", or calling other posts "meaningless" or "stupid" is a bit presumptuous and insulting, as you really have no basis for your comments. I'm assuming that the same goes for the Canon forum. Why would you invest in two different systems. I'm sure that's a topic for another 'stupid' thread.

So, take your own advice, and ignore the threads that you don't care for, and stop wasting other's time with meaningless threads like this one. Makes you a bit of a hypocrite doesn't it. That's was rhetorical.

This forum is the same as it's been since i showed up here three years ago, only there seem to be more people which may say something about Nikon selling cameras. The genuine helpfulness and occasional ego-trippin' is no different than any other forum i frequent, unless there is perhaps more a sense of community here. I don't think i would hesitate joining this forum because of an occasional nut-ball thread, including this one . . .
