Why to find out shutter count on D70s?

Is there a way to find out what the shutter fount is on the Nikon D70s is at? I am planning to buy it from someone off CL and he claims it has about 2,500 shots. I know I can take a picture to and see what the count is but I would like to know if there is a way to check in the camera itself.

No, only in the Exif data with the "Maker Note" section intact, but not in the shooting info visible in the camera.

Is it possible to erase or set the counter back to zero by the average person?
