Can a router or modem that is about 5 or more years old cause a slowdown on the computer to get sites and mail. Would a lack of cookie removal for a year add to the problem? Thanks John

Routers are generally pretty solid work horses.... There are exceptions where some routers will need firmware updates to handle some issues. Perhaps see if your router has any firmware updates available?

Cleaning out cookies / cache may help a bit.

Could be the modem.

I had a cable modem that was no longer supported or updated by the manufacturer. As the ISP kept upping the speeds the modem got slower and slower as it was adjusting its speed trying to keep a connection. It finally dropped the connection completely.

Modem was from a former cable company that sold out to comcast. Router is a basic one from dLink. Computer is iMac desktop. Will try removing all cookies. Did the rebooting and that did nothing for me since the tech guy from comcast left me.

Yes, I believe it was a Toshiba. I am away from home till Thursday, but will check a that time. Was there a problem with that one?

Toshiba stopped supporting their cable modems a while back, so there are no software/configuration updates available. As comcast keeps upping the speed, the modem can't keep up and tries to adjust/throttle its speed to compensate. Mine wouldn't even get a connection anymore.

I replaced mine with a motorola surfboard and my connection problems went away.

Thanks, I will go to their office later this week and get a new version of that model made by someone else. John

ISP blames it on the router. The modem was from a previuos company that sold out to comcast. Comcast had me disconnect everything and then told me to call the individual manufacturers prior to hanging up on me. That guy should be fired for that type of service.

It is a Toshiba modem ! . Took me some 20 minutes to get to this site. And that is with all cookies etc. removed. John

Comcast gave me a new modem, motorola. That is working well. The router was checked out and it was basically dead. Off to get a new one tomorrow. Thanks, John

What kind of internet connection do you have? If you are using a dial-up don't expect too much from it since it would only run at 56 kbps max. But if you're using broadband or dsl connection then you can say that there is something wrong.

Check the cookies of your web browser, you can remove them by going to certain menus. You could also check your anti-virus because there might be some viruses lurking inside your program. You could also remove temporary internet files and also try defragging your hard drive. If everything else failed, the last resort would probably be formatting your hard drive. I hope one of these tips helps you.

Thanks

I have comcast as my provider. I returned a modem (now Motorola prev was hitachi) to them which was questionable according to a previous comment made here. Still no real improvement. I then got Airport Express from Apple and WOW! back in business with no problems. The dLink I had was 5 to 10 years old. Have deleted cookies also.
Thank you all, John

One more thing about comcast, in my area can't say about anywhere else.

They don't have the best nameservers (DNS). I was constantly getting huge lag or redirected to strange places. I switched to opendns.org and haven't had problems like those since.

Something to keep in mind if you see 'weird' things happening to your connection.

Glad you got it sorted out

I am looking into Verizon either thru the phone cable or the new FIOS if it gets here soon. Comcast has been a problem even for family members in Penn. John

John -- I'm in the same boat as you -- comcast (formerly Patmedia) with a toshiba modem. Most of the time the service is great. 20MB down, 2MB up via speedtest.net. But sometimes it just goes out -- yesterday from noon till 8PM it was almost totally dead -- a few sites loaded (I suspect from some cache in their network someplace), but that was about it. For the last 24 hours, it's been perfect. I really don't think it's the modem, I think it's their network.

Seriously thinking about FIOS, but not sure the grass well be any greener on the Verizon side of the street.

Anyone with a track record on Verizon FIOS?
