To: Robert (Owl) Free Monitor hardware adjust software

I have found this site here to be the most comprehensive and helpful.

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

For many years I knew I would be better served by using a good quality hardware calibration device (like an Eye One Display or Spyder3) but found I was getting acceptable results just using something like the lagom site. A few months back I finally did a true hardware calibration (using a Spyder3) and have to admit I see a noticeable difference.

I'm not going to be a snob and say a hardware calibration device is a must have because many many people get on fine without one, but I will say I am quite happy with the results I get from the Spyder3. Also, maybe just semantics, but to me saying hardware adjust software sounds odd. As I understand it a hardware calibration is done using a piece of hardware, a colorimeter or some device similar to that. I think technically the thread subject may be written correctly, it just sounds funny to me.
Take care, Ted

Hardware calibration is advisable for fine tuning the monitors. Another problem is in different lighting and viewing conditions our eyes tend to have bias for colors while hardware calibration wont have that. But I usually use monitor calibration wizard and match it with print test chart as suggested on Norman Koren's website.

I'll have a look at the link you posted.

@Gary, the link you posted is leading to "Error 404, sorry page not found"

Thanks Gary and Ted I have them bookmarked for now I used to collect 100's of photo links but rarely would do anything with them other than a cursory glance. While I am sure there is need for improvement, my P880 images on screen look just as I remember regarding the fine nuance of color hue and shade esp. as regards the sky rendition for which I am very sensitive to noticing false color and such.

The P880 still has the most accurate sky capture of ANY DC I have seen and most Dslrs kinda Suck in that requirement to me for Landscape work which is why I Still have not moved on to Dslrland.

I posted this in another thread where you had mentioned your CRT before I saw this thread. This may or not be the monitor calibration wizzard Atindra referred to in post above.
Before I tried a puck and software and when I was using a CRT I calibrated with a program called Monitor Calibration Wizzard 1.0 with fair success. I use it for several years after getting it recommended to me, it was easy to use, it did not take long to run. I believe you can still download it for free, it is from a developer called Hex2bits and go here if you are interested in trying it.

Yes Atindra, How's your little girl doing, any updates?. I never print and I agree with your ambient lighting as I like to read in brighter light but I think it works better if an image totally fills the screen so no distracting DPR white background and I prefer slideshows in low light for critical viewing of images.

Since some are making such a fuss over this with its own thread, I will try to follow thru with any advice tho I said before in reply to Gary in another thread that I would only care if I started any serious printing of my MF film catalog as None of my digital work has compelled me to print for display.
P.S. Kim thanks for your link
Sincerely, Roberto of satisfied but mildly curious mind!

Often the issue is not getting images on your screen to look as you rememebr them, it is getting them to print that way and to look that way on other peoples displays. I mean if my monitor was way out of whack and I post prcess an image so it looks good on my monitor, it will look funny on everyone elses monitor and will not print correctly.

I spent years simply matching prints to my screen and that works fine for the most part. I have recently been calibrating with a hardware solution and I am happier with the results from that than I was simply matching prints.

That said, I fully understand not everyone needs that level of precision, my wife says she can't tell the difference and does no post processing on her shots, that is her preference.

Thanks Ted, as I said last year on KTF: The images from my P880 are set for low contrast & sharp but I Do prefer High Color set on the muted default color of the Kodak as my choice Chrome setting for my Nor-cal forest and natural setting shots tho this will wash out some colors like flower petals and such of detail but I find it is a MUST for overcast days and even light.

Then on Picasa the "I'm feeling lucky" edit will remove the warm P880 color cast and adjust the contrast like I want it 80% of the time but will not result in any change of contrast usually in Hi-key light scenes; followed by a small sharpness adjustment and that is ALL unless I go for a Ken Rockwell look as on 2% of my images where Saturation is set for 11+!.

I have never heard any comments regarding a lack of IQ in some category and most of the comments on DPR forums regarding all the people commenting on images on this and the Oly-slr, Pana, Fuji and now micro 4/3 & mAPS-C on Samsung(bring on the NX!!) I frequently ...my focus locks on and I realize I am seeing the same artifact or color cast, CA & color of PF as everyone else ...Am I really lost in Plato's Cave regarding our current Topic?? ...Oh well, ignorance is Bliss!! ...nice thread so far.

On Picasa "I'm feeling lucky" and sharpness are part of the Batch Processing and as I never save I can always back out of any edits for the Original without having to make copy images. This is my preferred method as it keeps my time & $$ variables to an absolute Minimum!! ...As in Zero as the ideal!!

Hi Atindra,

I have no idea why you receive the 404 message because this link is opening here @ my computer without a problem. I hope you can try it again and see if it opens for you.

From the image you sent me awhile ago it appears to me that your monitor IS well adjusted as it is. Personally I am doing little printing here in my home but I still like to keep my own monitor adjusted and this lil prgm works fine for me. It is ok others are trying to help with maybe better finds for such software as I suggested for you. Remb I sent this to you as I had promised in one of our earlier threads of discn.

As the link is typed in OP there is a period at the end. Removing the period should open the link without hte 404 error message I think.

OOOOPS sorry Owl I must have misread our earlier discussion! I thought you wished to have this info. My BAD! hehehe

I just enjoy messing with you Gary but this is a nice thread I must admit. Now if I had spent the amount of time DOing what you told me instead of having a serious Tap Taping afternoon on this keyboard I could probably have installed perfection that would have allowed me to make a small, hopefully tidy amount of $$$ making pretty Euro's & USD's at home!!

I forgot to tell YOU that this little program has it's own charts etc etc built into the program. IF you still have a problem opening this link email me and I will email you back the link. But like I said it IS opening here just fine. And of course it has a search for missing pixels. Nice overall prog I feel.

Hi Robert (Owl),

Wow you have a sense of humor for sure! I DO appreciate it believe me.

Just remember that I am no longer seeking to be "The Lizard King" like Jim Morrison but now rather prefer being "The Procrastination of Porpoise King" ...uhh, make that Purpose not Porpoise!!

The software I suggested to Robert does any type of monitor and very very well. Designed and programmed by Russian scientists which are some of the best in the world. It is an amazing program and they do it in english as a courtesy FREE.
