Live view is when you use the rear LCD screen for your viewfinder which locks the mirror up so that the viewfinder is actually blocked. And since you're in the USA, the camera is called the Rebel T1i not 500D.

Mine is a special version. It works in "M" mode as well.

I bought my camera in Denmark, so unless this is something country specific or because you have a special firmware version in the camera, I have not heard about the "M" mode before. I assume M stands for manual mode.
