Shots from China: C&C Please!

The first two are bad composition, in my humble opinion.

Following this shots, however, I think you did a decent job. Not stellar, but not bad.

In general, I think I prefer your shots of stationary objects vs the ones of people.

I thought #8, with the silhouetted policeman was the best. I'd prefer to crop out the people in foreground, and perhaps clone out any which didn't crop well.
  1. 1 has possibilities, but the light on the face of the vendor needs to be better. See if d-lighting will bring out her features. Fill light from flash may help with the people.
I do like the glimpse into the life of a different culture.

The composition is brilliant, the hands in transactions ...love this very much, inspirational. Lighting is good too, conveys the mood well.

Pic 2: 5/10 yums

Well she does have nice tomatoes, would have scored higher if she had coconuts, I like coconuts.

Pic 3: 5/10 yums
Although an excellent personal pic to have of the time in China.

Pic 4: 4/10 yums

Pic 5: 10/10 yums
I love this pic ...dude or dudette ...you rock

Pic 6: 10/10 yums

Easily my favourite ...I love the rush going past and the cut of light ...stunning.

Pic 7: 3/10 yums

Pic 8: 9/10 yums
Again another great China scene. Really Good.

Pic 9: 6/10 yums
Sort of necessary to take one of these when in China.

Pic10: 10/10 yums

And for an Aussie the moon is upside down ...I remember standing in the street one night just looking, the others with me thought I was nuts ....but the moon it was upside down, how often do you see that!!. ...and the plane, very cool. Love the composition too.

these all seem kind of random. that meat market doesn't look very sanitary.

Thanks for the input. I know some of these are random, but why is that necessarily a bad thing? I am just trying to take different shots in different environments of different subjects. Seems fine with me.

I am surprised as to which are some of the favorites. I for one like the market ones, even though I know they are compositionally poor.

I am also fond of the building with the moon over the top left. But I still welcome any feedback.

Thanks again.

Hi,

Love the series and the quality of the images for remembering what must have been a wonderful experience. I long to go to China and Beijing.

The only adverse comment is: do NOT show Image No 5 to EU food hygiene technocrats - they would have a heart attack! Completely unwarranted, but it shows the nature of Brussels officials with nothing better to do. Sorry, could not resist that comment!

The marketplace was fairly interesting. Questionable sanitary practices, but a cool place nonetheless. (Saw many people picking food up off the floor and putting it back on the stands).

Anyone find any photos on my Flickr that they liked? Any thoughts on making these shots better? None of them had an PP as my access to my computer is fairly limited. So any suggested crops, adjustments, etc.

I like them. The market ones capture atmosphere very well. I also like the building shots.

OK, not so purely a hobby.

Your girlfriend (你的女朋友) is very photogenic ...one of my sons is like this, you are pointing the camera in the wrong direction.

In the pics I could almost detect a style ...I have a thing for photographic style, moreso than technical quality and yours are on the way to developing one. Its not in every picture, just some, the ones where you relax in particular.

You have to be careful of seeking out responses though, you eye will discover what you like in your own pictures and your experience of liking will develop into skill. Can I tell you that you have a good eye for candid, the tomato and butcher pics in particular.

Also you dont need to make all your pics look better ...some wont benefit and some dont need it

Thanks for the feedback!

It is actually my sister, not my girlfriend. And the ones of the person with the tomatoes are my cousin.

It is also interesting the neatness of the person whose tools they are. Again, very nice work.

In china girlfriend (女朋友) refers to friend that is girl ...爱人 is for more 'amorous'.

Chinese does not have the spoken words for she and he, they are both the same which is why we hear many chinese that speak english refer to a she as a he and vise versa. ...and just as a besides 'comrade' 同志 once a popular red greeting is now a reference for having a gay disposition

Considering that we are talking about sisters and cousins here ...I thought the qualification necessary. :)

I'll yum along with prior post.
Pic 1: 10/10 yums
The composition is brilliant, the hands in transactions...
6 it's okay, w/ good detail of the shop; but I'm not much moved.
Pic 2: 5/10 yums
or fewer yums -- maybe more "ums" than "yums". Um, WWYThinking?
Pic 3: 5/10 yums
Although an excellent personal pic to have of the time in China
6 Maybe better if you'd focused on clerk's gaze, past cousin's consideration?
Pic 4: 4/10 yums
6 Maybe better if you'd shot from R, across real fish with prominence into
the poster fish!?
Pic 5: 10/10 yums
I love this pic ...dude or dudette ...you rock
Okay, clearly ExitHere like mooshi; I'm more w/that "sanitary?" doubter: well cooked!
7-8 yums. But DoF is good, and its a good record, good capture of scene.
(But I'm not scratching my monitor to sniff.)
Pic 6: 10/10 yums

Easily my favourite ...I love the rush going past and the cut of light ...stunning.
concur! Even the softness of two central objects fits fine; the light's lovely.
The movement of the train gives moment to the cyclists' pause.
Pic 7: 3/10 yums
Oh, no, more yums than 3: 7ish -- sharp straight bldg, cute position of moon;
yeah, be nice were it more promient, or even in the rectangular capture of sky
within building top, but ... .
Pic 8: 9/10 yums
Again another great China scene. Really Good.
The silhouette is arresting (!); yeah, if anything the gathered group along right
detracts, mostly, but ... . Okay, I like rust.
8 yums
Pic 9: 6/10 yums
Sort of necessary to take one of these when in China.
Sort of nice, 6-7 yums.
Pic10: 10/10 yums
And for an Aussie the moon is upside down
Hmmm, this doesn't thrill me; upside down yum would be 01, but it's more
than that. 5 yums.
Pic11: 10/10 yums

girlie no lookie chinesey but ...你的朋友非常漂亮 (your friend is very beautiful)
Eh, yeah, out of category here -- no yums.
Pic12 ? 10 yums
Is that General Motors China Branch ???
Ha (-; Eh, unmoved at this. 5 yums then.

Additional:
The umbrella & other on the steps:
9 yums, but crop out the not-well-gotten right side, which in any case might
be too much busy-ness there, detracting from the main objects.
