Yep--it's a shame, because it is otherwise one of Canon's finest
optics. It reminds me a bit of the Leica Noctilux: a very fine,
special-purpose lens. It wouldn't make sense to use a Noct at
anything but f1, just as it wouldn't make sense to use the 85/1.2L
stopped down. It's too big a chunk of glass to carry around
otherwise.

Consider the 135/2L: optics that are nearly the equal of the 85/1.2
without the other compromises. Yes, you loose those extra stops,
but you gain decent AF and a longer reach. It's also a more
affordable lens.

Dan,

sounds pretty grim the remarks ! Need to check this out

HI Jason,
I never heard about it on the D30 though. Did you do a test?

ws
Thanks for pointing me to the thread over at Rob's site. This has
been happening to me on the D30, and I wondered if it was just a
tendency on my part to tilt the camera when I hit the shutter.
Well, maybe it still is user error. But that tilt drives me crazy
sometimes.

Hi Michael,
No this is not the image i was referring to.
Here:
http://www.guishen.com/china-diaries/china-04-2002/pages/page-26.htm

http://www.guishen.com/china-diaries/china-04-2002/pages/page-27.htm (look at how the bkg horizontal line is tilted)

http://www.guishen.com/china-diaries/china-04-2002/pages/page-34.htm (again tilted, look at the roof tops of all the cars)
etc etc.
take a look at this thread:
http://www.robgalbraith.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=18&t=000858

it is a VERY odd problem and i never figured out why it happened,
neither did Canon HK who took my complaint seriously.

It is easy to do the test. It is subtle, mine had a 1.3 degree shift.

Hi Michael,

I agree! I usually find my 'blurry' shots to look much better in B&W or the high ISO noisy shots! =)

And it sounds like an early production of 1D is WHAT YOU NEED! haha, tilted images, noise, and focusing problem! =)

ws
I am to some extent picky - but I have given up expecting too much
from camera manufactors - I am happy with the 1D's overall quality
and the fact that I don't have to bother with film & stuff. Hope
they put out a full frame (24 x 36) 1Ds soon ...

In the B&W street photography a certain level of "rawness" makes an
impact - not 100% in focus, not allways correctly exposed, not
level(!) ..."the decisive moment" is gone in a few miliseconds and
not always time to worry about these things. You are right that it
would be nice if the camera would handle basic stuff !

I can also appreciate good color photography - which is very rare -
a lot of people use color and it just does not work for me - I look
at the images and think - God, not another bad composition that
does not use color as a intricate part - colors work best in my
oppion if there are few or one color.

I have one with serial 46xx - but the focus is perfect on mine (except when f... it up) - all in all a great piece of equipement !

46xx IS pretty early.
my first 1D was 4100. man, that was ONE buggy piece of equipment.

Got it - sure the autofocus is a bit slow from infinity to close up - but what a lense and amazing quality - now I just need time to go on another trip to China to use it on the street !

Michael

Congrat! I am sure you will make great use out of it! =)
now is your 1D tilted? =)))

tilted 1D + slow autofocus = great pictures with a distinct signature ;-)

better than no or crappy autofocus ...wonder if I tilt to the left it would compensate !
