I really would like to buy a new digital camera for my 2 months of travels in Europe. Can anyone answere these questions? Can I off-load pictures at an internet cafe? I am thinking of using one of those website storage sites for storing my pictures. Can photography stores take my memory card and put the images on to a CD? Do stores in Europe offer this service?

I don't want to buy a laptop and carry it with me. I would prefer not to carry another electronic device in general, but I will if it's a reasonable solution. I would like to take some high resolution pictures sometimes. Part of the fun that I anticapate in having a digital camera (I am looking at the 3.3 megapixal versions) is that I will be able to print 8"x10" or larger, and frame them etc.. But this is out of the question without finding some way of clearing my memory cards and storing the pictures I want to keep. I am even considering buying 2 large capacity memory cards, sending one card back to a friend who will save my pictures to his computer and then having him send the memory card back to me in Europe. While one card is in travel back to the U.S. I will be using the other card. Logistically this could be a real hassle. But I don't see a better solution. Any suggestions would be great.

Suggest that you do a search on all forums for 'Click Zip' and 'Clik Zip'.

I just bought one for extended travel. I haven't used it enough to give you any details, but I don't object to its size/weight. It is only a bit larger than my Oly 2020 and weighs about the same.

According to others, you can store many pictures before needing to recharge batteries (important to me as I do a bit of trekking away from the grid).

You do have to haul the docking station around to recharge. I don't object to that additional weight as it goes in my pack for bus/train trips. I don't have to tote it around during the day. Having the docking station would give you the hardware needed to put your pictures on the net from any computer (attaches to parallel port).

Chris -

For your purpose I don't think you have a better alternative than to carry a laptop as it would serve all purposes very well. Sounds like you might have or will have a GOOD laptop so presumably that would equip you with all the modern features. As to camera, don't feel you need go overboard on 3Meg-pix. They haven't got over ALL the problems and there are still some damn fine and less expensive 2Meg around. I have a Sony F55 & 505 (not V) - both with Zeiss lenses - and a CP950 on which macro is not beaten by ANYTHING.
All 2Meg and any will give - indeed do give - superb 8x10 with a decent printer.

A thought with all the basics in place is a Zip 250Meg external USB - you can get an awful lot of pics on 250Meg if you stick with the next-from-top res pic (I use 1024x768 consistently and don't find any worthwhile loss on most).

In UK the 250Meg disks are I feel expensive but we have to put up with it - I buy 2xFuji from a national chain called Pc World at I think it's 33UKP the pair but if you buy 4 Iomega pack it works out cheaper. In US I bet they're half the price! Point is, such as that does the job and you've got a permanently useful external home for files in future so it's money well spent in that sense.

IOMEGA CLIK seems a good solution, bit expensive. Try the search engine http://google.com/ using the words (iomega +clik) Space before the plus sign. No space between the plus sign and the word "clik" There you'll probably find everything you need to know about IOMEGA CLIK storage, including reviews of this device.

Iseem to remember photo processing shops here in Paris advertising just that. There are several cyber cafés here. Whether they offer loading memory cards I don't know. But I do know of one place where they rent out time on their computers for internet use, offering as well day trading connections. The next time I go by there I'll inquire whether they'd let you "plug in" device and load software. I believe their price is 10 francs for five or ten minutes.

It is

NewWorks - Champs-Elysées
10, rue du Colisée
75008 PARIS
for calls from within France dial 01 72 74 24 54

To telephone them from a foreign country dial country code 33 plus 1(Paris region code) then without the zero = 33 1 72 74 24 54

I travel with a Toshiba Libretto 50CT laptop which I fitted with a 4.3G hard drive. It weighs less than 2 lbs, the charger takes 220V (only necessary to have straight through plug adapter) and has a PCMCIA slot for type I and II cards. I bought it on Ebay for $500 and the 4.3G drive cost $165. I checked this morning and there are several Libretto 50CT's for sale on Ebay for $450-$650 and 6.2G drives are now available. I like it because it is light weight, easy to download my pictures and, with Irfanview, I can easily set up to scan the pictures. I also bought a 3com network card and when I get home it is easy to transfer the pictures to my desktop for processing. Additionally I use the Toshiba to keep a log of my travels and picture taking.

With this setup I am quite independent of the services of others which can be quite spotty in Europe (indeed in this country as well)

As far as I know is it not possible to download pictures in the internet cafe
here in the netherlands (amsterdam and rotterdam)

You have to search very well to find a store who can put your pictures from the card to a cd from the magazines i read coming out of germany and united kingdom the service on that is now starting they offer the service where you

send the picture by internet and receive the photo's of it, there are also in germany firms who has machine which send your photocard through internet
(i don't know if they can put them to a cd)
For your storage problem look at the site of minds@work
http://www.mindsatwork.net/
which i think is a good solutions if they can deliver

Chris, I went to that NewWorks place I had mentioned in my earlier message. They've got all kinds of equipment, but no SM or CF reader. After I told them it would be a good idea to have it, they told me they'd get one and install it. They could then accommodate you and burn your pictures on to a CD.
