Hi,

I was wondering if 50D can auto focus at 500mm with Bigma. If yes, how accurate are the AF'ed images? What about spped of AF? Assuming good and bad lighting conditions.

Thanks in advance.

I have the Sigma 150-500/5-6.3, which theoretically can’t autofocus at 500 on a 30D or 5D2. However, it apparently lies to the camera and the autofocus works fine. I will have to admit it works finer in good light. And as an aside, I have the Kenko 1.4 TC, and the lens/TC combo certainly shouldn’t autofocus at 500 mm, but it certainly does! Here I’ll admit that you really need good light, as the autofocus in a shady area is pretty bad, but at least it tries! I’ve not tried the combination except on one outing, and I was pretty disappointed in the quality of the pictures. I’ve used the Kenko TC with the Canon 70-200/4 L IS and the Tamron 90/2.8 macro with very satisfactory results, but you’d better start with a pretty sharp lens before using a TC.

Basically I’m saying you should have no problems with autofocusing with the Bigma.

yes it can ...any lens that when wide open is at least f5.6 will and it is ... it matters not that at full zooom it is slower then that

At 500mm, the Bigma "reports" f5.6 to the camera when it is really f6.3 which is how autofocus works with cameras that need f5.6 or faster lens to autofocus. 1-series and the EOS-3 will autofocus with an f8 lens.
