I am getting an fz28 and would appreciate any advice from owners. Are there special tricks/abilities that you love and which might not be immediately obvious to someone moving up from a simple point-and-shoot?

Thanks

Hi there;

In iA mode the cam will do all the thinking like a P&S.

You might try P mode instead which gives a little more room for tweeking. I would limit Iso to 800 max. You can try out most basic needs with the quickmenu joystick in this mode.

For indoorshooting don't use the zoom to much. Larger apertures will give better result in low light. When you use the flash you always have to push the button at left of EVF to engage the flash unit. On menu dial there's a button for flash compensation to dial down flashpower when close to people; you don't want them to look like rackoon's.

Next to that the cam has tons of scenemodes to experiment with.

There's a discussion group at flickr specific for our fz 28 where you might find other useful stuff:

I hope you'll enjoy your cam as much as i do.

I guess the only tips I would offer are to get out of iA mode ASAP and use the camera a lot. It's pretty powerful and it takes a while to develop a comfort level with the settings. Tweak and tweak in P mode--it's essentially free.

I guess the other thing I'd offer is that after you've read the manual cover to cover a few times to learn what Panny calls various features, download the PDF version so you can search it. The index in the printed manual is pitiful.

Read the manual and take your camera and do each instruction page by page and then read the manual again.

I agree, reading the manual is a must. This little photo tool have a lot to offer. My only other advise is: take a LOT of pictures. Change settings and examine the results. Look what looks best to you. And of course, here is a great place to find people that want to help you, I decided for the FZ28 after extensively looking trough this forum.

Best wishes and great pictures!

Set the focus assist to max. OIS to 1 or auto and shoot alot of the same thing to evaluate saturation, contrast, sharpness and noise reduction settings. Look at each shot at 8x in playback before taking another. I like to half press the shutter to see the picture in the evf and adjust shutter and aperture from there. Play with white balance for more impact. Open the pictures in picasa to make easy adjustments. Telemacro is great for closeups without lens distortion.

--Try to read thru the manual, practice, read thru the manual, practice, etc. The camera settings need to be altered for some situations to get the best results. I usually set the exposure for 1/3 minus. The “P” mode with Intelligent ISO works very well and you may want to use the either “Aperture” or “Shutter” control depending on the circumstances. TheFZ28 is a wonderful, easy to use, extended zoom camera with a great zoom range. Try Macro with the zoom, the Macro button is on the top right near the shutter release, and, in short, do what has been mentioned, experiment. Film is cheap. No, wait that was with the cameras I use to use. Digital is much cheaper. Have fun, ask questions, post your images, and don’t worry about mistakes. They have a delete button for that.
