Any suggestions for opaque blackout fabrics? I have heard of commando cloth, but is this opaque? Any other fabrics, not vinyl? Thanks!

Any fabric store has "blackout material" - it's a white, rubberized fabric that's lightproof and used as a curtain liner. I think you'll find it's pricier than commando cloth.

Commando cloth is heavy and could be usable for blackout - it'd cut the light a lot, but I don't think it'd be as lightproof as blackout material. But it's excellent for black backdrop, even for close-up tabletop work. http://www.chicagocanvas.com/theatrical-fabrics/

If you want to cover windows, I've had great success with mulching film. It's usually sold in Home Depot-type stores or garden stores. I've seen it in two thicknesses. Buy the thicker variety which is really opaque. It's easy to cut with any decent scissors and it usually clings to the glass while you tape it in place.

I got some stuff at Home Depot that is used for the garden pond liners.. It is a felt material and is in the outdoor section near the pond stuff.

Aluminum foil works well for low budgets and fairly small areas.
