After much deliberation I've decided to buy a Tamrac velocity bag....preferably the smaller the better. It must hold a D90 with Nikon 70-300 lens attached or the kit 18-105 attached and comfortably store a further Sigma 10-20 and SB400 flash.....i.e. 3 lenses in total

The Velocity 7 may hold all, the Velocity 8 will.

I'd appreciate if anyone would kindly post any photos of either bag with what you carry in it, to help with the process. Unfortunately there are no local stockists so its probably mail order. I could order both and return one, but I'd like to get it right first pass.

Thanks

Mike

Velocity 8x, most likely.

I own the 7x and my gear consists of a D40, 3 lenses (granted my biggest lens is the 55-200mm VR) and the SB400, it all fits, but it I had a bigger camera like the D90 or if I had a 70-300VR, then I'd have to move up to the 8x.

Ususally, when people come in to my store I sell the 7x to D40/D60 buyers and the 8x to D90/D300 buyers.

Good choice in deciding on the Velocity bags, Both are awesome, and I haven't found anything that lets me get to my gear quicker.

I have the 8X and love it. In the main compartment I carry a D90, 18-105, 70-300 VR, and SB800. Sometimes I carry other lenses if I know I have specific needs. The D90 with 70-300 fit nicely and leave about an inch on top. The D90 & 70-300 with the hood attached I cannot close the top. Someday I hope to get a 70-200 2.8 etc. and the 9X may have been a better choice. If that day comes I’ll probably get the 10X so between the two bags I’ll have lots of options.

I like the size of the 8X and don’t find it too big to carry. It’s fairly comfortable, especially if you have shirt or jacket with a collar on. I always use the one strap and have the bag up front for quick access or on the small of my back if I’m just walking around. It’s very easy to move back and forth. Sometimes if I might need the 70-300 quickly I put the camera strap around my neck, camera in bag up front and the top of the bag flipped open or closed (not zipped).

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like its the Velocity 8......any chance of some photos with the kit installed and a photo of the bak and the camera gear outside.

If you don't ask you don't get !!

You definitely need the 8 for the equipment you want it to hold -- don't think the 7 will work.

I think the Sigma 10-20 will just tip you over the top for the 7x

I have a similar kit. The 7X will snuggly fit..

Nikon D90 with either my 16-85mm VR or Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 (same size as a Nikon 70-300mmVR) attached and the other lens down the LHS (when wearing it).
The RHS has less room and will accomodate my SB400 and a 50mm prime.

The Sigma 10-20 is significantly bigger than a prime and, I think will, make things too tight.

I think you will need the 8x.

PS it will get a bit heavey hauling all that gear around on one shoulder if you are out all day. But the bag does give very good access to your gear.

Cheers Darin

I have the 7x. Your equipmnt will fit, but it will be a bit snug. Either one, they are great bags. Used mine evryday during a six month africa trip. Best bag I have ever used plus durable.

In the 7x I can carry:

D40x with 18-200 on
35 f/2
120 gb colorspace in a waterproof otterbox
kata case with 12 sd cards
100,000 West Africna CFA
$200 USD
Passport
yellow fever card
extra passport photos
small buck knife
lens cleaning cloth
mid size lonely planet guide
extra contacts
change
2 sd cards out loose for easy access
a few small souveniers bought along the way
pack of smokes and lighter
extra battery
...trying to think here

...i know there are alot of other things i carried, but you get the idea (not that this mishmosh list of cr*p helps you)

They are great bags though, the zipper kept the dust out in Northern Sudan and Cameroon, along with the wandering kids hand in Tambacounda, Senegal.

Super comfortable ...carried it everyday for six months straight
Low profile which is nice

8x may be better for you...

Personally, I like the Lowepro Off Road. Google it. I replaced one of the side holders with a bigger one that holds my 80-200mm f/2.8D, other holds a second lens or my SB-800. Inside holds the lens hoods and everything else I'll need for a hike or event like an airshow where I don't need every lens.

I’ll try to get some pics for you but it might be awhile. Also I forgot to mention one thing I wish the bag had is two zippers for the main compartment. I always seem to look for the zipper on the wrong side.

I have a similar set up with the 7x. (D80, 55-200, 17-55, SB600, 50 1.8). I suppose I could cram all that stuff in there.

I have to tell you, I looked at the LowPro Slingshot and I REALLY wish I would have gotten that one. I think it is much easier to access your gear. This is only my opinion, some may disagree. I think you owe it to yourself to consider it.

Definitely another option. I think the slingshots are a totally different animal though. More "backpack like". If thats what your looking for. You can wear the 7x and 8x with a backpack, which is what I needed. Using the slingshots as an actual backpack is useless too...

It's all opinion.

The first picture is the bag and what I usually carry in the main compartment.

This picture shows the D90 with 70-300 in bag. Fits easily.

This picture shows the D90 with 70-300 with hood attached in bag. I can zip the bag closed but it’s a little tight.

Hope these help. I’m sure you’ll like the bag.

I agree. I have a LowePro Slingshot 100AW and a Tamrac Velocity 8x. I much prefer the Velocity 8x because it has the versatility to be worn as either a backpack or shoulder bag.

You can't do that practically with the Slingshot because it's shaped more like a traditional backpack. Also, the Slingshot rides on the right shoulder, the Velocity on the left, which may be a factor.

But everybody has his own preferences. If someone is accustomed to carrying a backpack all the time (which I'm not), he/she might prefer the LowePro Slingshot series.

And if I were going on an all-day hike, instead of moseying around like a tourist, I'd probably take the Slingshot specifically for that purpose.
