Sound Blimp Quality

The jacobson is really quite. I just used one last week, with the 1D mark III.

One actor asked me about it, so I put it about 3 feet from him.
In high speed mode, I held the button down.

the actor had no idea.
when I told him I had just taken 5 shots, his eyes raised in amazement.

I knew the shots had fired, because I could feel it, but I don't think the actor knew.

cheers!

I have used the Jacobs sound blimp and it works very well. If the room is completely silent you can barely hear from 3 feet away. Mostly you can feel it. I saw a "Sound Blimp" by a company called Aquatech at Photkina in Germany. The ergonomics looked more comfortable and is supposedly weighs less and is quieter than the Jacobs blimp...we'll see.

Wow, this thread goes back a bit!

Echoing the previous posts, you can here the thump of the shutter since it's right up to your eye, and it's true you can barely hear it from 18 inches away. Also, on film and TV sets, even when it's a "dead-quiet" scene, there's still some ambient noise in the air that the sound of a blimped camera doesn't cut through.

One thing I learned: prime lenses are quieter than zoom lenses in a blimp. I assume it's because there is less surface area on the smaller lens tube to transmit noise when you're using a prime. However, I gave up using primes in my blimp because the flexibility of a zoom is much more important to me.

Lots of people talk about alternatives ("there must be a better way" is a common phrase I hear when I explain to people what my giant black box is) and I know there's a few out there, but no one has made one that does the job as well, and it's not like the market is ablaze with need for this type of tool: Jacobson said they move about 3 of these a week.

I have been looking for a blimp for quite a long time... Jacobson doesn't seem to respond from their website to me. I don't care about what brand it is. Anyone know where I might be able to get hold of one that would fit a 1DIV and lens tube for a 70-200 2,8 IS? Store or Private sales? I'm in Melbourne Australia.

Not to keep bringing up old threads but just thought i'd say that for what i needed a blimp for i ended up using my ikelite underwater housing which muffled the sound much better then any contraption i managed to make myself, pricey solution if your not already an underwater photographer but it let me have full control over all my camera settings and since its thick plastic and air tight it made no noticeable noise to my escort at the event who was checking to see if my equipment was silent enough who was 3 ft from the camera.
