I was thinking of renting the D700 to try it out before buying. However, I would like to look at the NEF files. I have Capture NX but not NX 2. My understanding is that I need NX 2 in order to read D700 NEF. If I download the Nikon free 60 day version, are there any shortcomings? As an example, will it only let you look at files but not save them etc. Thanks.

Hi,

As far as i know you get a fully working copy of NX2 for 60 days. I'm sure once you have tried the D700 you'll want one lol ;-) I had a Canon 40D before i bought my D700 and never regreted buying the D700 for one moment. Never used my Canon since I got the D700 - I love it so much for it's low noise at high iso's and I'm sure you will too. It's a wonderful bit of kit.

I run an application that cjanges the exif to say it was taken by D3

works fine.... :)

However the 60 day trial version is the full package.. worth trying anyway!

I would be interested to know the name of the application.

Thanks.

Renting is great way to see if the camera is really for you. I rented the D3 and used it for a weekend (usually if you rent it on Friday, you can use it all weekend for a 1 day charge) and it was clear that my software wasn't up to the challenge (NX and Iview Media Pro) so the d700 became my choice and I budgeted for software upgrades as part of my decision.

Good luck.

It's called D700hach.exe

google it.. you will find it very quick.

following the simple routine.. NX opens them as D3 NEFS

I'm thinking of buying a D700.

Am I reading this correctly that I need this Capture NX2 to really use the camera?

So can I not use RAW without this software?
Surely it should come with the camera then?

Thanks for any info.
