How to tell if a camera is from the US?

find that retailer in their authorized database. Also the retailer's
website states that all products have US warranty.
Their products may have a US warranty but it may not been a Canon
one. That's what happens down here in Australia with grey market
items sold in Australia. The retailer warrants that the product will
be repaired but not by Canon.
But often they send the camera to Canon, or a Canon authorised repair centre for the repairs, they just pay for it themselves. Some may have a local camera tech who does their work, but many will send to the manufacturer, maybe even overseas for the repairs.

At the moment in Australia, it is possible to get genuine Canon Australia products for the same (or close to the same) price as grey/parallel imports. I have even seen some lenses cheaper from Canon Authorised dealers for cheaper than Grey prices.

Any time I've sent a camera or lens for warranty work, all they were
interested in was my proof of purchase, my invoice. They've never
asked for the warranty card.

You can call Canon again and give them the name of the vendor and the
serial number. They should be able to tell you what you need to hear.
Notwithstanding that, there's a subtlety.

As far as I know Canon has different policies in what regards to
cameras and lenses.

While the first can only get warranty protection in the world region
where they were purchased, the second benefit from a worldwide
protection umbrella.

I have already benefited from this, having lenses that were sourced
from the US, serviced here in Portugal under warranty.

I doubt Canon USA is exempted from this general Canon policy.
Canon Australia have said ALL lenses are covered by an international Warranty, but some Authorised Resellers have said only some lenses are covered by the international warranty.

Canon USA has said only some lenses are covered internationally.

It's easy to see why the AR's would try to create such a diversion. It's obvious the Canon Australia stance is the one that counts.
Canon USA has said only some lenses are covered internationally.
Would love to see the list of lenses Canon USA considers exempted from that policy.

Another quick way to check is to reset the camera back to Manufacturers default and look to see what the video output is set to.

PAL will be a European Camera.
NTSC will be a US Camera.

Try to register the camera on the US Canon’s web site.
If you are allowed to register the camera, then it carries a US Canon warranty.

If you are not allowed to register on the Canon web site, then it is does not carry a US Canon warranty, and may be gray market or used.

Just my experience!

I am out to take the perfect picture, if it exits! :)

Ok, I bit the bullet and registered it at Canon. They accepted my serial number, so I guess it is a US camera. Plus, I have an email from canon stating that I have full warranty for a year from the moment of purchase regardless of whether it was an authorized dealer or not, I just need the invoice.

So I guess I'm set. Now I'm going to try and extend the warranty to 3 years if it's possible.

Anyways, thanks everyone! Although some people might've been a bit unsympathetic, it's undeniable that there is a very strong community here, and it's all thanks to you guys.

Hopefully I'll start sharing new photos soon, now that I'm not afraid to use the camera :)

Thanks again!
