Impressionist Photography

Hi

Interesting topic.
Dear Friends,

Has anyone ever experimented with Impressionist Photography?
Yes.
Quite a lot of pleasing images there, but not nearly "focused" enough. A lot of "ordinary" pictures mixed in between.
Thanks for the link. Interesting technique.
Would you pay for a print of one of these images?
No, but I think there may be an audience for pictures like this.
If you want to experiment with this, so have this in mind:

No technique can save a bad picture.

Dear Friends,

Has anyone ever experimented with Impressionist Photography?

Here is an example:

I don't know if I would, but I'm sure it would have a market. It has a truer artistry to it than just using a Photoshop filter, I'd say...

I got a very impressionistic photo shooting down over a hot road, that I liked the look of a lot even though there's very little in the shot that's not rather wavery.

It's good to know that my out of focus blurred photos are actually impressionistic!

Impressionism never has been limited to painting. Eva Polak produces some very nice work in this school. http://www.evapolak.com/

Some say that Stieglitz - one of the fathers of modern photographic art and a mentor to Georgia O'Keeffe was an impressionist photographer. His famous shots such as "Spring Showers", "Paris Snapshot", "Icy Night", his nude shot of Georgia O'Keeffe, and of course his wonderful series known as "Equivalent" could all be taken to be impressionist.

Some but certainty not all of the shots by Edward Weston could also be included in that movement.

Art is about self expression - stating a message, taking a stand, etc. There are no real rules out there.

A few attempts (done on purpose, as originals were out of focus, and in this way I "rescued" them):

A few days ago (in the Midwestern US) we got a driving rain from the west which created irregular, vertical flow on a bay (picture) window. Unfortunately, the view was mostly of facing houses across the street. However, with the right lens/light/subject I thought at the time this could have been a nice expressionist piece.

It seems a perfectly valid form of photography to me, like many other techniques applied to create a new type of work.

The pitfall to avoid with this is the mistake of thinking that any old image can be turned into a masterpiece by applying a filter (physical or software).

A good photo requires good judgement, not rote application of a quick fix. Anyone emember the early days of Cokin filters? Does anyone still use starburst filters, tobacco grads, heart-shaped masks? Just wondering...

you still see some of these in sunset/sunrise pictures in calendars
(I have one of the calendars, but not the filter).
