For most circumstances I prefer 'fingerless' gloves with the tip of the finger exposed.
I have several pair:
For cold weather, I wear a pair of boiled-wool mountaineering gloves under waterproof overmittens and take the overmittens off when needed to shoot.
These ugly but comfortable things are available everywhere.
For cool weather I wear those without the overmitts or a lighter pair I got in New Zealand made out of possum fur.
For wet cold (sea-kayaking) I have neoprene versions.
There are versions made with an attached mitten that folds out of the way.
An alternative to wool is polyproplene glove or mitten liners. I prefer wool over polypropylene for gloves after having a pair of poly glove liners catch fire while stirring a kettle on a stove. I got them off before I was too singed or set the tent or sleeping bags on fire.

Odlo make a stretchy, close fitting, warm glove with grippy inserts on the palm and fingers. It is intended for those crazy Norwegians who go running in winter but it is perfect for cold weather photography.
