I've had exactly the same problem that you described with my new Canon Powershot SD780 IS. This is how I succeeded to upload my big movies on my computer : using "Windows scanner and camera wizard". It's one of the options that poped when connecting my camera via the USB cable.
I found it pretty odd that this utility worked better then Canon's one, but in any case it worked! Good luck.
