Hi- I am a stay at home mom looking to learn more about photography and my new Canon 50D. I got it for Christmas and I love it, but the manual is too confusing. I am a very visual learner, so I was wondering if anyone can suggest a good Canon 50D Training DVD? I need something more geared towards beginners.

Thanks! Shelly

Have you tries looking on Youtube for instructional videos?, There may be some on the 50D and there is plenty on understanding Aperture/Shutter Speeds/Spot Metering etc... The 50D is a complicated camera for a beginner but at least you will not need to upgrade for a long time! :o)

Look at this site..

http://www.learnslr.com/

There is a 50D guide and FAQ on the left.

Also try this site, I recommend it to beginners, a virtual camera in which you can adjust all the settings.

And if you are using Lightroom or Photoshop

Lots of videos on that site!

Good luck!

Thank you fishmeister for the suggestion to check Youtube.com! I found a really great video there on Canon 50D "Live View" by a guy named Michael Andrew. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkYQMKZLjj4 - it clicked and made sense! Im excited now! lol.

He has a Canon 50D DVD Video Training guide called "Canon 50D Crash Course" and I am going to try it out. The link for that is http://www.canon50ddvd.com . I know I probably sound retarded, I just need some help learning. I know you probably think it wasnt a big deal, but thanks so much for your help! I wouldnt have found it without your suggestion. I feel so lost and just want someone who knows what they are doing show me. I will post what I think of it....just if anyone else is curious.

Hello, I've really enjoyed the Magic Lantern series of DVD's. I just watched the one for the 50D and it was great. It was pretty thorough and you just can't beat the being able to see the actual menus from the camera as it is explained. I happen to have an extra one if you're interested - I'd sell it for what I paid. Let us know what you think of the other videos as well.

Have fun !!

I know most of you pros probably wont care about this, but for the newbies, I wanted to post feedback and a quick review on the Canon 50D Crash Course DVD by Michael Andrew, it was outstanding!! just what I needed :)

The video lessons were short, effective and very entertaining- waaaaay better than reading the manual. Ive probably watched it 7 or 8 times in the last 2 weeks, and being a newbie to digital photography am now proud to say I know every button & nearly all of the menu features and what they each do. Something I wasnt expecting was that he taught a lot about photography in general and built the lessons on these core principles. I feel so much more confident about practicing to get better. I know have much to learn, but just in case anyone else is struggling to learn their 50D, as I was, I would absolutely recommend it, its about 3 and a half hours long, but its probably the best instructional dvd I've seen.

I appreciate the offer for the other DVD, but i am quite happy with Michael's. There is so much information on there I will probably hang onto mine for a while because it seems to be a great reference for review. He also has a video on Photoshop called Photoshop Crash Course, which Ive just ordered and am waiting for.

Thank you for the tips that led me to it! :)

Good for you. But taking photos and experimenting will really improve your photos. I liked Bryan Peterson's Understanding Exposure or Jeff Wignall's Exposure workshop. I took the on line classes which was the best thing I did for my photography

For me one of the big benefit of a class is that it forced me to go and take photos both to get used to using my camera and understanding how photos come out at different settings. Have fun.
