on my EF 50mm 1:1.4. Canon repaired it free of charge. My research into this matter makes me suspicious of the FTM clutch assembly on this lens. Since the repair, I simply don't use FTM, so far (approx 1/2 year on) still working.

I've had mine 15 months now and it's still good as new.

If/when it does fail I'll upgrade to the 1.2L but not until then.

directly but I can report on 2 units from two different photographers having the AF failure after a year of so.

mine (4 years old) sometimes won't even try to focus. re-focus and it starts again.

I'm gonna have to send it in.

do they (canon) charge a flat rate for this lens like they do with flashes?

and second had a cranky clutch OOB

I don't really own one, but my friend had one and his failed after 1 year + 3 months of using it very lightly on his 5D. One year warranty was up, so no luck there for him except to use it on manual mode now. It's the only reason that's keeping me away from the 50mm f/1.4 prime at the moment. And yes, I've done the research on AF failure on the lens already and it's a common problem.

Yep had one fail after it rolled out of my pocket on grass when kneeling down. really only dropped about 50 cm, but after that it had a "hard-spot" on the AF rotation, which meant that you had to help it over the bump if it had to focus from near to infinity and otherway around.

Sold it as "defect" for cheap and bought a new one, now replace with 50 1.2 for that reason. I cannot stand poor mechanic construction and I have the money available.

Regards,

Which 50 1.4 are you talking about? Hopefully the Canon as I just picked up my Sigma only 20mins ago.

Kind regards
Stephen

Mine focused badly out of the box but I was able to compensate with MFA. Now, just a couple of days shy of 1 year, even MFA can't compensate: the lens is enroute to Canon/Irvine now.

What is failure to you... if you mean it makeing zit zit when you press the af button (got mine decoupled), then yes, mine works after about 3 years of heavy use. If you mean it'd take sharp pictures... well no, then it doesn't work and never has... fortunately there's FTM and my eyes ain't all that bad.

Around 6 years old (maybe more), moderate use.

Only problem is the manual focus ring is a bit rough when using 10x liveview on the 5DII, hoping to lubricate. Perfect otherwise...

Greetings,

Just sent mine in for repair to Canon Service, Irivine, CA .
AF dead.
Purchased lens in 2007.
Estimate cost of repair $95.00
Note: lens seldom used.

Failed after 4 years. Didn't even know of this problem, just used it to shoot a wedding and read about problems of this lens on the forum, got it out to see if it was OK and it literally failed after reading about problems. Will AF just a little bit if subject is almost in focus. I know that I retracted the lens a few times when new by pushing on the lens cap which is probably how I killed it. Still works manual and will probably put off fixing it for some time. I still have my 50 macro and unless I need 1.4 it will probably sit on the shelf.
