I just received the 1Ds3 I ordered from B&H. The box has a small yellow dot next to the serial number. Does this dot have any significance?

Yes, means the dot is neither red or blue!

LOL sorry, I have no idea, oh and by the way, get ready for some ready fun with Canon's top of the line camera :-)

I don't think so.
Maybe something internal at B&H.

the dots do have significance. Whether or not it affects you is another story. Those dots are from canon btw. not b+h.

im guessing it has something to do with production times/runs.

Im sure its been discussed before somewhere here.

Those yellow dots mark those cameras which could not pass Canon's rigorous "Yokohama" series test of the ability of the camera to accurately (plus or minus 0.004 mm) focus on groups of at least six Romulans running directly at the camera at approximately 58 mph in environmental conditions defined by prolonged weightlessness, temperatures exceeding 256 degrees Fahrenheit, and humidity higher than 99%. I hope this answers your question, whatever it was.

Don't laugh, I'm almost serious,

Ok,

I stole this from a SportsShooter.com thread where it was supposed stolen from a FredMiranda.com forum post.

-> > FWIW from the Fred Miranda Canon Forum:

Blue Dot on the box indicates post affected range camera with updated sub mirror box installed on assembly line. These were stopped being put on boxes in Feb this year as far enough past affected range.

White Dots (one or Two) in the battery box indicates returned and fixed sub mirror assembly by Canon Service.

The Yellow/Vanilla dot on the box, supposedly indicates Firmware 1.2.3 pre installed...

I think that refers to the 1D3, because according to Canon's website,
the latest firmware for the 1Ds3 is 1.1.2.
Dots were originally used on the 1D3 after the early AF fiasco. If I remember, blue dots were used first to indicate bodies fixed (sub-mirror) at factory during manufacture, and the yellow dot indicated it had the latest firmware installed.

I did see some reports about dots on the 1Ds3, but not sure of their relevance, or what they referred to.

color dots places on Canon camera boxes are ment to mark particular batches of cameras leaving the factory stock. The marks usually mark soemthing that has been recently changed or fixed so it's easier to know which camera is after and which is before 'something'. This 'something' can be either the new firmware preinstalled or some hardware/subassembly change. I don't think that colors have any permanent meaning - the marks are rather temporary and after some time while the stocks clear the dots and color can be reused in later actions for various camera models.

My original 5D came with red dot (it was just after the hardware component change - the old case with 1 being fifth digit in serial number), my first 1D3 came dotless while the seccond one had the blue dot which at that time meant submiror hardware fix. My 1Ds3 came last July with blue dot as well what probably meant the new firmware 1.1.2 preinstalled.

Please see what firmware number you have. Maybe you have a camera with very new - not yet announced - firmware version? The last published and known is 1.1.2 and it has been published almost a year ago now.

Jerry I feel for you...you asked a genuine question and got silly answers from most of the threads!

The yellow dots on the 1D/1Ds indicates that the camera in the box had the harware and firmware fix from Canon following the AF problems with the early 1D MKIII cameras. I think that cameras manufactured from Feb 2008 ( look into the battery slot of the camera and you will see a number like OW04xx) till July/August 2008 had the yellow dot on the box. Later batches have no dots on the box.

Hope that helps..

I might be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure that no 1DsIII (I have one) has ever had a "hardware fix" performed by the factory to the mirror assembly. That was done to the 1DIII, not the "s" model.

As for my own attempt at humor here; it was meant as a very gently, but hopefully amusing way of saying: don't worry, be happy! No matter what any dot on the box may or may not mean, if the camera works properly, as mine (bought a year ago) does , it really doesn't matter. If the camera doesn't work properly, you need to send it back, no matter what color of dot appears on the box. Get it?

Just be sure to check the firmware version, and update it, if need be, by looking at the Canon site:

Yes the 1DsIII did have dots for firmware vintage and more importantly that the instruction book actually matched the firmware in the camera.

I actually thought the dot on mine was green and not yellow, but it just means you got the latest manual that includes the description of of the "joy stick" being able to address more AF points than the previous version.

As to photographing Romulans mention by a previous poster, I find that the large glowing chest of the females causes mine to front focus. But... Maybe that's just a function of my joystick.

Yellow dot and after is the camera to have.

It comes with all the latest manufacturing and firmware updates. I have two 1D111 both blue dots and they are fine. The yellow dot came after that.

If you have a yellow dot camera then you have, subject to having no obvious faults, a good camera that will out perform most others on the market. They are superb cameras and will do a sterling job for you.
Enjoy

The 1DIII I purchased from Calumet NYC in August has a yellow dot. Maybe they bought it from B&H. :
