D700 "neutal" or "standard" for portraits

I personally like D2X Mode 1 for studio portraiture. But, most will concur, I suppose, Neutral is much better than Standard for studio portraits.

If you shoot RAW, you can change the picture control after the fact with NX and opening: base adj.--> camera adj.--> picture control.
An easy way to discover wich of the pict controls works best for you.

All photographs are only more or less credible illusions

Standard has too much contrast for portraits.

Standard vs Neutral vs Black and White has no effect whatsoever on the NEF file, other than to tell NX2 what to do if you let it.

Of course shooting mode has an effect. If you shoot aperture priority f8 your exposures will be at f8. Period.

Spend one full hour testing your camera to see how it works. Film is free.

The neutral settings I gave you for the portrait picture controls are very very close to the downloaded D2x portrait control.

Most would be hard pressed to tell them apart.

Most all agree that the standard picture control is too vivid and contrasty for portraits.

I'll "process" portraits in NX2 and apply Picture Control "Portrait". I find that it delivers pinker flesh tones than Neutral and also allows some saturation boost without ruining flesh tones.

I use portrait picture control, download it from Nikon's web site.

Yes, it makes a difference if you use Nikon's raw converters.
