I have the 28-70mm 2.8 & the 300L IS F4 which are both fairly heavy lenses. I also use my 1.4 converter sometimes paired with these lenses. I’m now moving from my old 35mm (film) EOS 1n to a DSLR and want to make sure the camera will safely be able to hold the heavy lenses over time. The way carry the lens camera combo during a shooting session is by holding the camera body with the canon PRO hand strap attached and of course the lens is attached to the camera body. Would a 450D have a strong enough body to support these lenses over time. Or do I need to move to a 40D or 5D type body in order to support shooting with the heavier lenses.

The 28-70 will be supported all day long. While there have been no reported problems with the 300 or bigger lenses, I would recommend how you tote it around. I do not support it with the lens straight out and just holding the body without supporting the lens. I just don't do it. But I have supported it quite often from the neck strap slung over my shoulder like a purse. With the lens hanging straight down. Then when rotating up to a shooting position, supporting the lens with the other hand. Or I have just wrapped my hands around the lens and picked it up by the lens.

I would suggest a bigger body. A large lens on the 450D looks a bit ridiculous, and will not feel right in the hands either. Also it seems like you may want the 5D, to match the field of view of your film camera. But that's triple the money. :-\

beltzdan, thanks for that good suggestion! It never occurred to me to carry the camera and with it's 300mm lens around in that way. It does make good sense though. You answered my main question which is whether the 450D body was strong enough to support that kind of lense over the long run.

FireFromSkye, You've hit on the other point that I was really concerned about which is getting the full benefit of my lenses by using a non crop camera. The real issue for me is that when I was younger I didn't mind lugging around the EOS 1n all day it just didn't affect me, but now I find the idea of having a light weight SLR camera/lens combination is very appealling. That's where the idea of getting the 450D came into the picture. I was hoping to have a nice lighter weight wide angle zoom for walk around lens then only put on the big gun lenses for portraiture and more specialized shots.

Thereare lots of users out there with this combination or older rebel series cams. Head to PBASE and do a search. You will see tons.

If you get the 450D, I would suggest replacing your 28-70 with the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS. That is if money is not an issue, because that lens is pricey. But it will be just like your 28-70 is on a film camera and it is a great lens.

Just pick with one hand on the lens, if the lens is really heavy neither the 50d is good enought for you
