Hi, I am thinking of buying the s100fs and would like to try it out or hold it in my hand first. I have looked around and it doesn't seem to be anyone who is still selling it in the stores. All the online stores I am also not familiar with. Is there a trustworthy online store that you woudl recommend? Also is there a dslr or other slr-like camera with a similar size/weight body that is currently in the store that I could check out to see if I like holding it.
Thanks in advance.

--I bought my S100fs from Dell. I paid almost full price but, I couldn't wait for the price to drop. They have great service and prompt shipping. The Fuji is Awesome!!! All the reviews kept focus on a problem with CA but if you buy a good multi coated Digital Filter then it's no issue. A highly reflective surface like chrome in direct bright sun gave me a little purple fringe but all other conditions were taken care of by the filter. I haven't tried many DSLR's so I can say that it is about the same weight as my Elan 7 w/35-105 lens.

Dell probably have a decent return policy as well so a proper evaluation can be done with little risk.

Adorama has a demo model for $499 right now:

Their regular price after rebate is only $528 right now:

I've bought from Adorama several times (from Canada) and have been impressed with the speed of their shipping. Recommended.

That is an urban legend ... adding another air to glass surface does not improve CA. Some people suggest that a polarizer improves it, but this is almost certainly a combination of bluer skies (hence hiding the fringing) and better exposures, since over exposures exacerbate the issue. Whatever works, but I'd stay away from recommending a "digital filter", whatever that might actually be, as a cure.

Suggest you perform an A/B test and post the results for peer review. Make sure it is on a tripod, exposures are identical, and there is little time between shots so the light hits at the same angle in both shots.

It is as big and heavy as most entry level dSLRs today ... and a bit heavier than the smallest ones.

When they first came out there was a locally owned (read that as not a chain store like Ritz) by me that sold them. They dont carry them anymore, in fact they don't carry any Fuji cams and when I asked about it the guy was not in the mood to discuss it. The mega chains like Ritz for some dumb reason only carry the Fuji point and shoots which is a real shame in my opinion. I would bet they could sell more S100fs cams than they can the point and shoots since most of the P&S crowd seem to gravitate towards the names they know.

Walmart here sells a few Fujis ... the J10 in plastic wrap for $136cad, and a couple of others. They had the F50fd up until a month or two ago for about $248 (too much) and they have one or two other models, including the S700 for about $218cad. Dirt cheap.

But that's their thing ... they only sell cheap cams ... and the S100fs would never sell there because they cater to the Luddites ... not to the enthusiasts. I imagine most other big bix stores are the same ... I've not seen the big Fuji at Future Shop, Best Buy or Costco either. (Yet FS and BB have the G10 and other enthusiast cams ... also a huge line of dSLRs ... go figure.)

Perhaps its just volume considerations ... they know Canon and Sony outsell Fuji by a wide margin so they don't even both ...

Thanks. I just saw that Walmart has it online, Office Max and Samsclub. They don't carry them in the store but it would be easy enough to return to the store if I ordered it from one of these 3 places. Walmart seems to be the cheapest though and is currently $549 - the $50 rebate. Not sure about shipping though. It would have tax added to.

Do you think there is a reason to wait to buy? Do you think Fuji will be anouncing a new model and that I should wait to see if the price drops.
Thanks.

Thanks ... I've never seen it in store, but I had not checked their online sites.
Yes, I know that the Henry's in Kanata, ON has one, as that is the one I tested :-)

Well, it is quite possible that Fuji will announce a new model shortly (PMA) ... we've already seen pre-show announcements posted on DPR ... so you can roll the dice and buy now or be conservative and wait. The odds are excellent that the price will not rise in the mean time.

Ihave bought my last 3 cameras from Buydig.com and they are golden. No hassles, no upselling, no bait and switch or attempts to sell other stuff to you.

Mine worked out to $518 after the $50 rebate.

In B.C. (Canada) I purchased mine at London Drugs (a chain, plenty from point & shoots to latest D90 etc) and also saw it at Lens and Shutter, another chain, cameras only, with perhaps dozens to choose from.
cheers
