Virgin Raw Shots (6 pics)

Hi Jada,

Very beautiful pictures. Inspired by yours and Tony's excellent birds pictures, I think I will go out to do some birding myself.

I have all three and some are just better than others for different jobs.

Lightroom excels in photo management and has some auto fixes that does an ok job most times. Real plus for me is the ability to export from Lightroom to Flickr. Supposedly you can correct CA in Lightroom but whenever I've tried and moved the slider I don't see any change.

For buttons to press and stuff, can't beat S7Raw. Does a good job with CA and just about anything really. The interface... well I am a System Engineer so I like it. LOL.
FinePix Studio is ok as well.

I was wondering, if you shoot RAW how come you can't change the FS setting after the fact? Since you can change WB and some other stuff.

Noiseware is good to have to remove noise from high 800 images, if need be.

Christopher

p.s. Love those bird images. Keep telling myself to try for some more myself

of the raw files and they are slightly over 23 megabytes! I think I need to either save these to a disk or delete them. My computer isn't that advanced (much like myself). The standard photos range from about 4 mb to 4 mb.

Dorito, the backgrounds weren't touched. The only thing that was applied to the photos was sharpening.

Thank you so much for commenting. I learned something about the size of RAW. :-)

Danny, thank you! And I eagerly await your photos, which I know are going to be terrific.

and for taking time to comment on my photos.

I'm curious about the FS question you asked. I know this is going to sound dumb, but I don't know what it is (FS). So hopefully, someone will respond with an answer. :-)

Here is wishing you a fantastic day!

FS means Film Simulation; check the name of your camera on top: S100fs. I think only Fuji makes those huge raw files. Other brands will be about half that size; try your p&s in raw and check it out. Great shots by the way, wish mine were as good.

Jada,

Lovely set you have there :)

How is the S100FS comparing to the G10 now?

Have a lovely Christmas and a happy new year.

Regards

Paul.

FS means Film Simulation as the other guys have pointed it.

I read a review I think it was on http://www.trustedreviews.com that said FS was more of a gimmick than anything else.

I don't agree. I think it can be a niffy feature. Want "punchy" colours, then Veliva works. Soft is just nice. And Provia is good all round.

I bought a copy of Popular Photography January 2009 issue. In it there is a section called how to master your camera (dSLR mainly as most of their stuff seems aimed at dSLR owners) and in there there's a bit about if you want to capture "the over-the-top" Fujifilm Velvia look then you have to set: "profile to the max/vivid, push the contrast up one notch, boost the saturation as far as it will go, and bring down the sharpness one notch"

In contrast we just have to select one setting. I think the S5 Pro has FS settings too, though a bit different from what we have.

Generally after reading this magazine and looking at their tips etc, everything they mention is applicable to the S100FS. It is really like a dSLR without having to change the lens.

disclaimer I said like a dSLR, not is or not better LOL. so no one get offended ok?

Christopher

Very very lovely photo's of very cute subjects :) blonde. (hate your nickname btw)
I shoot 95% in JPEG because it suits my snapshots perfectly.
I am not convinced that for normal circumstances RAW is superior to JPEG.

High ISO shots however, and scenes with a 100% predictable issue in regard with PF will be shot in RAW but even then I'm still in doubt.

I've done some tests RAW vs JPEG and I've learned one thing... a 'blind test' is an eyeopener for most photographers. Grtz. Blanche.

The main advantages I see in RAW are the ability to correct missteps like incorrect white balance or lateral chromatic aberrations or (within reason) overexposed/underexposed shots. The sharpness, etc. of a good RAW converter outside the camera versus the decent RAW converter built into the camera is rarely too large, and even more rarely visible at normal print sizes. (For high ISO shots, it can also be handy to have more control over the noise reduction that shooting in RAW mode permits, too.)

In my shooting, white balance and exposure tweaks are by far the most common adjustments for RAW conversions. That would be somewhat different if I still used a Fuji camera, I suspect, as those two things were more consistently right on the S9000 than they are on my current K10D. (On the other hand, shooting RAW on the K10D is a mcuh more practical matter than on the S9000, which is glacially slow in RAW mode. The S100fs is, of course, very much improved in that regard over the S9000.)

Makes me feel good about the S100fs I have on the way right now.

Well done!

Digital imaging has introduced a whole new generation to the joy of photography.

I believe that Adobe Converter RAW (ACR) has a tool called the Adobe DNG converter that can convert the RAW files into losslessly compressed Adobe DNG "RAW" files so they become around 11MB with no loss of quality.
See if that helps save you some space!

Also, I read that using the Adobe Lightroom or PhotoShop software, rather than the Fuji tools for the "RAW" processing would be better as the Fuji software is supposed to be very slow compared to the Adobe stuff.

Thank you for the FS information.

Chris, also thank you for sharing those settings. Might be interesting to see what they can produce.

I am so taken with the G10, but it can't replace my Fuji (given my limited experience). I'm very glad that I made both of these purchases.

I'm using the G10 for scenery, landscapes, a few night-time shots, and for taking photos of my neighbor's dogs and cats. And it just goes along with me, anywhere that I want to take it.

Thank you Paul for your nice comments.

so much for your comments and for your great tips.

You know, I don't think I'll be doing much shooting in raw mode, either. For one, the files are huge (dumb-dumb here just learned that today when Dorito asked me how big the file size was). For another, I'll never make a living with photography. It is just something very close to my heart that I enjoy doing.

It was very exciting, shooting in raw, because it was something new. When the mockingbird appeared out of nowhere, I was relieved because I had just taken the camera out of raw mode. I was still concerned about being able to download a mix of raw and 'regular' shot files, but it worked out okay.

Thank you, Blanche for commenting. I appreciate that. :-)
