Hey all,

I'm moving up the ranks from my older Rebel XT. Just picked up the 50D after some serious deliberation b/w it and the 40D. So far I'm extremely happy, love the screen resolution and the feel of it. Anyways, looking forward to getting out and really putting it through its paces.

Cheers and happy holidays to all,

I also just moved recently from the Rebel XT. I found that the focus accuracy was better, and the microadjustment in focus has proved extremely valuable because of front focusing of one of my lens/body (17-55 f/2.8).

Now when I used my XT today for comparison tests, I felt like I was using a toy. The screen seems so tiny! And the grip so small! The 50D is more expensive and heavier to travel with/walk around with, but it's definitely a big upgrade.

Anyways, one thing I found, is that I had to occasionally adjust the WB outside in normal daylight, and also, that the picture style seems to behave differently based on the lighting conditions (in camera JPEG or in DPP in RAW), where indoors with flash I need saturation at 0, without flash I need +2, and outside I use +1 (vs. the same settings all the time on the XT), otherwise pics don't look right. Actually outdoors, I feel depending on the conditions that sometimes color saturation in Standard or Neutral mode at 0 is OK, while some other times I need +1 so the picture doesn't look "dead". ON my XT I used saturation at +1 and contrast at -2 to preserve the dynamic range.

I'd like to hear what your impressions are vs. the XT!

I never had the XT (is that the 350D?). I had the 400D (XTI), 450D (XSi) and 40D

In general, I found that the xxxD range have a more aggressive sharpening and colour nature for inbuilt JPGs. xxDs are more neutral by default. I think DPP has std setting effects and trys to keep the effect of settings the same between cameras. However, in camera tweaks may be slightly different balanced.

I am going to be a bit dismissive and say that I only use RAW. Although I always take RAW+jpg if I need a quick pic to send to someone. Although, these days

the MP count is so high that I always downscale before sending for a quick view, which I guess I could do just as easily from RAW.

I usually find that Canon gets the WB wrong under tungsten light and in other challenging lighting conditions. This seems to be a common problem for many SLR manufacturers. But I always adjust in DPP.

I don't normally use the in camera settings. In DPP you can save setting application.

Lightroom is the best system to remember defaults and mass process RAWs. However we will need to wait a while as Adobe dont seem to have a good RAW processor for some new cameras including the 50D.

And lastly, as a little rant, Nikon has introduced a great feature in NX2 which allows different settings to be applied to different areas of the picture in a very neat way. Looking fwd to this feature in DPP .....

Be careful guys, there are lots of people at this site that don't like the 50d and will do their best to make you fell like you bought the wrong camera. I have never seen a nastier group. Enjoy your great camera no matter what the na says here say. There opinions are meanness if you enjoy your camera. This site has really taken a nose dive as far as users being nice to one another, many people have stop coming do to all the child like bickering.

Couldn't agree more bbw49, it is as if we should have waited the 18months for the 40D to be replaced so they where justified in their purchase (oh no the noise police will be here soon and will show us 100% crops!). Its a shame because the 40D is a stellar camera, the 50 adds bells and whistles the 40 should have had (anyone for Lens MA) Very nasty environment here these days for 50D owners so its up to us to change this.

I have some old film Nikon gear as well and compare their forum and I must say they are very warm over there and critique in a helpful manner. Even when Ken Rockwell says the D90 is a better camera than the D300 (got to love him!) :) :).

Enjoy the 50 as I am (can't put the thing down). The lust for glass is now growing. Getting the battery grip this pay! Ahh canon have got me again!

:)

I thought photography was about the images not fan boys! Enjoy your Photographic weapon of choice. I know I do!

I wish I had a 50D :)

You guys enjoy the new cameras. From what I've seen, the 50D is great and well worth the price difference over the 40D.

And you're right about the nasty tone in this forum lately. I'm not sure what it is, exactly, but a LOT of great people no longer post here because of the bizarre and childish behavior of a few regular meanies :)

The best thing to do is to swamp out the mean-spirited posts with useful and friendly posts of your own.

Have fun with the new camera.

I read quite a bit of the back and forth about how awful the 50D was, etc. And when it came down to it, I made the decision based on my personal needs, knowing that either camera would be a huge step up for me personally.

And when I looked at both of them side by side, the rear screen is just stellar, and the extra MP will be important for me as I often shoot birds, wildlife and sports.

Haven't really had a chance to put the camera through its paces yet, other than quickly realizing the 6400 iso and 12800 iso(especially) are essentially useless.

I was at our company winter party chatting photography with a coworkers wife. They asked the usual questions: what can the 50D do that the 400D couldent?

Besides the obvious FPS which is useful when shooting moving objects (they both agreed), the LCD and micro adjustment are my top picks (along with liveview).

In my mind, the 50D combines all the good features of the 40D+450D+More into one camera.

Eh? Useless?

ISO 12800 shot of the Orion nebula:

..taken off a still tripod, no tracking, no telescope, 85mm ƒ 1.8 lens, multiple frames. Try that at ISO 100. :)

ISO 12800 action shot at 1/1250th in very poor light:

ISO 12800 shot of a friend at night:

etc. The trick to all this is to not look at noise as if it were an unclimbable wall. It isn't. It's just a factor to be compensated for. If you resolve to never use those ISO settings, you're shooting yourself in the foot. Of course, it is your foot, so... :)

What does ƒ 8 have in store for us? I shutter to think. We're so exposed... we'll just have to see what develops. Put on something filmy to take my mind off it, would you, dear?

it's good to hear other 50d owners appreciating the positive aspects of this incredible camera. i've had the 20, 30, 40 and now the 50d. it's simply the BEST.

have fun
tom

I think a lot of people were underwhelmed b/c of the minimal differences b/w the 40D & 50D. And I think a lot of that had to do with the heat being turned up by Nikon who, lately, have been innovating quite quickly with their new models.

I'm sure the 60D will be an interesting camera with some new features like video, etc. but for me, the 50D will suit me just fine. As much as a gadget-junky as I am, I'm still more concerned with the photographs I take than the gear.

And the 50D should let me do that quite well. I'll avoid doing noise tests through the night and just use it as a great camera.

I owned a 40D, 20D and 300D (Rebel) before my new 50D and, thus far, am finding it the best of the bunch except for one issue: I now need to buy a faster, UDMA-aware card reader because the 50D files are sufficiently larger that the extra time to download the contents of a card has become quite noticeable (factor of 50% over the 40D).

David

I tend to use a high speed cf card reader and it works well. I also use the faster cards whenever I buy storage. People spend thousands of dollars on lenses, then won't spen the extra 10 or 20 dollars on high speed cards that are less likely to fail, which just baffles me. I've been buying extreme 3 cards since the beginning, so I'm not too worried about it.

Well i am loving mine too. I did look at the 40D too but i liked the 50D more after playing with both. I paid the extra and upset the wife and my accountant.

My conclusions so far?

40D is a great camera and can take fantastic photos.
50D is a great camera and can take fantastic photos.
D90 is a great camera and can take fantastic photos.
D300 is a great camera and can take fantastic photos.
