... Canon, Nikon and ... Sony.

Today I visited the biggest camera store in Scandinavia, they are redoing their interiors, and have obviously been paid heavily by the three brands above to promote photogear. There is a big Canon stand, an even bigger Nikon stand and a smaller Sony stand showcasing everything from SLRs to compacts and LCD displays.

Olympus is stowed into a small box in one corner together with Sigma, where Sigma has 2/3rds of the box. Pentax has one whole box.

4/3 has been 5 years in the making, and the success at least isn't showing in stores. It's more of a dust collector.

First question: How old are you?

2nd question: I'm assuming that you are at least 18 years of age (probably older).

3rd question: Now let's see, you only have 31 posts so far and to cap it off, you've relegated us (and Olympus) to the dust bin.

This leaves one obvious question...."did your parents have any kids that lived?"

The THREE big ones is.......

Excellent grammar. Do your parents know that you are playing around on the family computer? This is why children need to be supervised at all times while surfing the net. Seriously, open the door so that they can keep an eye on you. There are a bunch of nasties out there in cyberspace.

with respect Ben
we expect persons of 18 yrs old to fight our wars,
based on age alone then
i think he's entitled to cut the rough a little with his 9 iron :)

OTOH, i predict a fruitless campaign in some far away service provider battlefield
a few fleshwounds in a short engagement
an a romancing interlude with a not so pretty nurse

the world never changes...

1) I think this thread can be interesting for quite a few Olympus users regarding how 4/3 is being promoted in comparison to the other brands.

2) I didn't know there was a minimum number of posts required before being allowed to give an opinion.

3) The OP speaks of a Scandinavian store so there's a good chance English is not his first language (it's not mine either) so criticizing his grammar is in poor taste. By the way, how many languages can you speak and write without grammatical errors?

Unless I missed something I don't know why such a drastic reaction from a forum that usually is quite courteous.

In fact, Olympus collects less dust than any DSLR, thanks to the SSWF.

I shoot with what I feel like shooting, not what everyone else uses. Brains are wonderful things, but you do have to use them on occasion.

Not knowing who you are and why you post this, the reaction you going to get is well deserved. Anyway, I try to give you a real answer why it is like that. Just for background, I live in Scandinavia as well and have been using Olympus for about 28 years. So, here is how it is for the moment...

Canon and Nikon are two very aggressive companies competing mainly against each other. Sony is a company which bought Minolta some years ago, basically their DSLR history starts there, just a few years back, Sony was nothing else than a P&S manufacturer in still imaging before Minolta. Olympus has a long history in SLR and 5 years in DSLR.

The thing is that Olympus had its Scandinavian head office, distribution and service center for cameras here in my area, in Malmö until the end of 2006. Olympus Japan decided to close and centralize Europe back then, moved Scandinavian HQ to Stockholm, service centers to Check Republic and Portugal, warehouse to Germany. At the same time reduced marketing efforts and no longer offered anything free of charge for any shops. Before that date camera shops could have a limited number of items and they only had to pay Olympus after they sold the items. Now they have to pay in advance. This makes life difficult for shops which are otherwise keen on selling Oly gear.

Canon and Nikon still distributes their DSLR gear free of charge to almost any shop. Can you figure out what this results in? Every shop has a huge pile of C & N gear, some large ones has a limited Oly stock and the smaller ones stopped selling Oly all together because they simply can't afford to keep them and without having them in the store they have problems selling them.

Very few people buy their stuff the way I do, I call my local shop where I have been a customer for 20 years, ask for the items ordered and when he gets my gear he calls me and I just go to collect and pay for it. No testing, no whining about price or change of mind and no business, he knows me and he trusts me when I call him and place my order, but if you'd call he'd say no, he is not selling Oly and I fully understand him.

BTW, which is the biggest camera store in Scandinavia? Mediamarkt, a very large (=huge) germen electronic chain has two large shopping centers near me, I have just been to one of them but they have every Oly body and many lenses, not only the cheap ones. Yes, even they have mostly C & N but that really isn't bothering me. I am quite happy with my "dust collector" as you call Oly gear.

Now, whoever you are, whichever camera you have, be happy with it and let us like our Olympus "dust collectors". Personally I don't mind going against the mob, I am pretty sure many people in C & N land has absolutely no idea about what they are talking about and are no better photogs than anybody else. It is not the brand which makes you into a good photographer, but I guess you wouldn't know that anyway, so no point to talk about the benefits of different systems.

I think you should have explained your question or position a bit better before you started this stupid thread, which the OP actually is. At least a short intro does not hurt, considering your total of 18 posts so far.

BTW, I think Sony would be gone from the market if it was not for Minolta, Pentax would be bigger if they only had lenses... Your news was sort of no news to anybody but you. We all know Olympus is not the largest camera company and we actually don't mind that.

Good luck and I hope you find your peace of mind somewhere...

Well my old dust collector took great pictures and didnt actually manage to collect any noticeable dust in over 18 months solid use 25, 000 + shots . I doubt you could say the same for the other brand dust collectors.

I'm sure my new dust collector will be even better!!

I agree.

Well, some sort of intro would not hurt. I perfectly understand why many people se this as very provocative, give the language he uses (and I don't mean grammar or spelling or that he is not English).
3) The OP speaks of a Scandinavian store so there's a good chance

I am with you here. Personally I don't speak or write ANY language without grammatical errors, but reasonably well at least four (not counting Danish and Norwegian which are similar to Swedish).
Unless I missed something I don't know why such a drastic reaction
from a forum that usually is quite courteous.
Because it smells nothing else than brand bashing and flame bait. But of course, that's a matter of interpreatation. IMO he should have started off a bit more polite if he wanted another reaction.

The OP obviously came in here to start a fight. He threw a few low blows so I returned the favor. I fed him once and that is all I ever intended to do. Sorry you have a problem with it. Have a nice day (imagine animated smiley face emoticon in this space).

as long as Olympus continues to make their products at high quality and great prices... but if one day they don't I will just move on to using other systems, but for now 4/3 is working great for me. I am happy with the images I am getting .

Olympus is quite a respectable company due to Olympus Croatia. People can say many things against Olympus here but noone will say Olympus Croatia has bad marketing or poor customer care.
Regards....and sorry for my english because is not my mother language.

I agree with what Rappasol says. But again , I read posts all the time and do not post many of them ; so I guess I am not qualified to write an opinion
The question you should ask yourself is : who is childish here ?

About grammar : where are the terrible mistakes that some here mention ? he wrote in perfect English

His purpose was just to let us know how overwhelming some brands can be when they throw around big money and how Olmpus looks when put into the mix in some stores in Europe ; he meant that they look like dust collectors when compared to CNS glitter but certainly did not intend to bury Olympus. To the contrary it would prove that he felt sad for a brand he likes.

On the other hand , I am European and know Sweden very well ; almost everyone in Sweden speaks at least 3 languages ; so who are you in America to even dare speak about grammar when schools here are ranked worldwide at # 70 something in just after Zimbabwe?

Quote by Robert Roaldi: I often take pictures at less than optimum apertures and shutter speeds. At 1-to-1 on my monitor I can often see the blur that is the result of too low a shutter speed and too much coffee. But I can often fix those pictures by just reducing the magnification and printing them anyway and pretending that I never saw them at 100%. It seems to eliminate the problem.
