... Canon, Nikon and ... Sony.
Today I visited the biggest camera store in Scandinavia, they are
redoing their interiors, and have obviously been paid heavily by the
three brands above to promote photogear. There is a big Canon stand,
an even bigger Nikon stand and a smaller Sony stand showcasing
everything from SLRs to compacts and LCD displays.
Olympus is stowed into a small box in one corner together with Sigma,
where Sigma has 2/3rds of the box. Pentax has one whole box.
4/3 has been 5 years in the making, and the success at least isn't
showing in stores. It's more of a dust collector.
Not knowing who you are and why you post this, the reaction you going to get is well deserved. Anyway, I try to give you a real answer why it is like that. Just for background, I live in Scandinavia as well and have been using Olympus for about 28 years. So, here is how it is for the moment...
Canon and Nikon are two very aggressive companies competing mainly against each other. Sony is a company which bought Minolta some years ago, basically their DSLR history starts there, just a few years back, Sony was nothing else than a P&S manufacturer in still imaging before Minolta. Olympus has a long history in SLR and 5 years in DSLR.
The thing is that Olympus had its Scandinavian head office, distribution and service center for cameras here in my area, in Malmö until the end of 2006. Olympus Japan decided to close and centralize Europe back then, moved Scandinavian HQ to Stockholm, service centers to Check Republic and Portugal, warehouse to Germany. At the same time reduced marketing efforts and no longer offered anything free of charge for any shops. Before that date camera shops could have a limited number of items and they only had to pay Olympus after they sold the items. Now they have to pay in advance. This makes life difficult for shops which are otherwise keen on selling Oly gear.
Canon and Nikon still distributes their DSLR gear free of charge to almost any shop. Can you figure out what this results in? Every shop has a huge pile of C & N gear, some large ones has a limited Oly stock and the smaller ones stopped selling Oly all together because they simply can't afford to keep them and without having them in the store they have problems selling them.
Very few people buy their stuff the way I do, I call my local shop where I have been a customer for
20 years, ask for the items ordered and when he gets my gear he calls me and I just go to collect and pay for it. No testing, no whining about price or change of mind and no business, he knows me and he trusts me when I call him and place my order, but if you'd call he'd say no, he is not selling Oly and I fully understand him.
BTW, which is the biggest camera store in Scandinavia? Mediamarkt, a very large (=huge) germen electronic chain has two large shopping centers near me, I have just been to one of them but they have every Oly body and many lenses, not only the cheap ones. Yes, even they have mostly C & N but that really isn't bothering me. I am quite happy with my "dust collector" as you call Oly gear.
Now, whoever you are, whichever camera you have, be happy with it and let us like our Olympus "dust collectors". Personally I don't mind going against the mob, I am pretty sure many people in C & N land has absolutely no idea about what they are talking about and are no better photogs than anybody else. It is not the brand which makes you into a good photographer, but I guess you wouldn't know that anyway, so no point to talk about the benefits of different systems.
I think you should have explained your question or position a bit better before you started this stupid thread, which the OP actually is. At least a short intro does not hurt, considering your total of 18 posts so far.
BTW, I think Sony would be gone from the market if it was not for Minolta, Pentax would be bigger if they only had lenses... Your news was sort of no news to anybody but you. We all know Olympus is not the largest camera company and we actually don't mind that.
Good luck and I hope you find your peace of mind somewhere...
