for me, video is the only thing holding be back from converting from canon to the D700.

does anyone have any idea of video will be but in the D700 via firmware upgrade?

i have always been impressed with nikon adding functionality to cameras and not just fixing problems via firmware

there is no such thing as a stupid question
only stupid people asking questions ;-)

Really? Suddenly everyone has to have video on their DSLRs? This was not true a few months ago. The D700 is the better camera from IQ to features to performance. If the video feature tips the scales - then have fun with Canon.

I do think Nikon will release a pro/semi pro camera with video... but I think it needs to mature more before they do it. Canon rushed the 5D Mark II out the door.

Buy A Camcorder not a D700

you buy a D700 for many reason, a video implant is not one of them

besides no company in thier right mind would never do an update as you have suggested via firmware....they would put out a new camera and up the price by a $1000. USD

a camcorder and hd video from dslr is not the same.

i would love to have video on the dslr.
but i can live without it.
i get hired to take pictures. if they want video, they'll hire a videographer.

but... everyone that says video is stupid on dslr is probably the same people who said they didn't want high iso back in the days.

it's something that you may not want or use right now, but it's a feature you'll appreciate when the time comes.

btw, i'm a canon shooter switching to nikon by the end of the year.

as for nikon doing a firmware... i doubt it.

Such debates make me laughing. I recall Bill Gates' famous "640K ought to be enough for anybody".

Come on, guys, in a year or two all (or almost all) DSLRs will come with HD video.
It's a good edition to more traditional SLR features.

I'm thinking about switching to D700, and if I'll finally do it, I know, I'll miss HD video.

Why do I need camcorder when I walk with children and want just record some short events. One device is more than enough in this case.

Adding video to any DSLR is not a big problem. But not HD video. something like D90 does, i.e. JPEG-based movie (it stores series of JPEG images). You'll not get a superb quality and it will require more flash memory, but it's something.
You'll not be able to record sound.

Anyway, there are rumors about such a firmare expecting by the end of this year. But rumors...

Great advice.

Since you are an expert in this field, can you please recommend a camcorder that can accept my Nikon 85mm f1.4, 50mm f1.4, 14-24mm f2.8, and Nikon mount 8mm fisheye? I have a project coming up that needs focus tracking to follow a dialog.

And it should have the low light ability of a full frame sensor, I have several available light shots planned.

It should also take the same batteries I use for my exiting Nikon cameras and use the same media, to avoid extra cost, weight, confusion with media.

And by the way, I'd like it to not take up any extra space in my camera bag, or add any extra weight, because there are a lot of situations where it would be useful to have the camcorder with me.

Awaiting your recommendations,

Thank you.

Cool, you know my reasons. You know me better than I know myself. I have a lot of things I'd like to discuss with you...

You're right, no company in their right mind would "never do an update".

There is great wisdom hidden in your lack of writing skills.

1: The current live view has about a 12-15fps output and this is most likely a hardware limitation.

2: There is no hardware video codec in the camera (such as a motion jpg or MPG4 compressor) which is most likely needed to encode the video in real time. I seriously doubt this ability is in the EXCEED processors themselves.

So while the potential for the logic to be added for video might be there, there are most likely fundemental hardware parts missing to get it going.

Don't get me know, I'd love it if they could get me something on my D3 but somehow I think this is something for models of the future, not already released ones.

There is a hacked firmware for Canon 40D adding a video capability.

Thus, I assume if it's possible for 40D - it's possible also for D700 and others.

This is reasonable to expect on new feature lists. While there are limitations to video on a DSLR, camcorders are easily bested by DSLRs in macro and telephoto. Wildlife photographers will be doing a lot of this with top Nikon glass.

Same with Nikon. I just bought my wife a D90. While the DOF and, believe it or not, focusing are better than what's offered on good camcorders (I've owned Sony Z1 and now have EX1), the image quality just isn't there. Nikon needs another revision of the video with H.264, high data rates, and better performance through downscaling and even crop modes as well as a way to connect audio, such as a USB microphone to record uncompressed audio.

My guess is that it's perfectly possible, but done more as a hack, the quality won't be good enough. Might be a theme for a "D700s" upgrade, I think.

I don't think Nikon will throw in a feature here without getting it "right".. and there seems to be a lot of challenges to be overcome.
