I am considering trading my slightly used, great condition D70 for one of the above.

I am looking for better out of camera jpegs that require little to no PP, or at least less than the D70.

Does this sound crazy????

Thanks!

It depends on a few things...

1. Do you have any lenses without a built in motor? Or do you plan to have any?

2. Have you held a D40 and D60? Do you like the smaller size or not?

These are the main drawbacks to me of the D40 and D60 (I personally wouldn't consider the D50 trade, but that's up to you..) If neither of these are a big deal to you then a D40 or D60 are going to be an upgrade in some areas..

1. bright and punchy out of camera jpgs
2. Nice 2.5" LCD (you will love it)
3. Size (can be good or bad)
4. In-camera PP (it's nice on occasion)
5. Superior Menus
6. Slightly brighter viewfinder

There are certainly other differences, but these are the most significant to me. I think that for the right person, a D40 or D60 could be a great upgrade to a D70, for others it wouldn't at all. I own both a D40 and a D70 right now.

Thanks for your reply. Tha's pretty much what I'm thinking, if I make a trade.

Just wanted to get feedback if it was a totally insane idea...

Thanks alot1

Used some custom curve to put out a more punchy picture years ago, and have loved the camera until just ordering the D90. The 40/60 just didn't do much more for me, finally the D90 has some things that I am interested in. If you can do it and not loose too much money then it may not be a bad idea but I wouldn't trade much to go from the D70 to the D40/60.

I traded my D70 for my second D40 and would do so again in an instant. So much better it's hard to explain. But I am a jpeg shooter and do not post process my images unless I goof something up that I really want or need.

I bought a D40x to go along with my D50. I like the D40x and use it most of the time. Right now, my D50 mostly just has the 50mm f/1.8 on it but I have no plans of getting rid of it.

But, I can see someone trading from a D70/50 to a D40/60 if they have had the D70/50 long enough to know they aren't going to want to AF with any non-AFS lenses and know that they won't miss some of the other things the D40/60 doesn't have

Other than the AF issue, the most annoying difference to me is the lack of the top and bottom focus points and that is not a deal breaker - but I am not real demanding of my uses. I do like the menu system better and the review operation and the small size is a plus for me mostly - a little more cramped but nice for portability.

You forgot about one big upgrade:

7. image quality - better sensor, less noise, 1-stop higher max ISO (=3200), more MP (D40X, D60). I recently made a 13x18 cm print of an ISO 3200 image (indoors) from my D60 - hardly any noise visible, need to look very close, ISO 1600 looks virtually noiseless at this size.

D60 only:

8. Active D-Lighting - really useful for good out of camera jpegs, I've used it in many contrasty lighting situations to get more dynamic range and it works.
