I just sold my XTI and going to buy a XSI for the wife to use, the 40D is too large for her small hands.

I can buy 8G locally SDHC Class 6 with a speed rating min write speed of at least 6MB/s for less than $25.00. Is this fast enough ??

The store also sells sandisk SanDisk SDHC Card Extreme III 4GB - 133x -20MB/sec sequential Read/Write speeds for $45.00

What is the recommend speed of the SDHC for the XSI.
Thanks

That's the fastest class of card you can buy... which is why a few people were upset when the XSi went from CF to SD... I was one but I haven't really noticed much of a difference. I've taken 40 or so jpeg shots in a row, and can get raw shots fast enough.

I have a class 6 SDHC 4GB, and even though I don't take consecutive shots (I shoot portraits, JPEG, no RAW), I feel like I could probably go Class 4 without noticing any slow down... I think you are gonna notice the most speed when transferring files from the card to the computer using a card reader.

I just did a side-by-side comparison of the Sandisk Extreme III 4GB with a Kingston 8GB Class 6 at half the price (both on my Nikon D80 shooting RAW), and found that there was essentially no difference. The Sandisk was a tiny bit faster, but the difference would be unlikely to ever make a difference for my use. I saw go with the better value.

If you are shooting in RAW you will be more limited by the buffer of the camera then the speed of the card...

SDHC Extreme III's are awesome... I also picked up a Crucial SDHC card for 10 bucks, its totally fine as well.

Faster cards will transfer to your PC faster if your card reader can handle faster speeds.

By the way 1x = 150 KB/s and 100x = 15 MB/s (all in bytes per second)

USB 2.0 speed is 480 Mb/s (bits per second) = 60 MB/s (bytes per second)

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then photography is not 'lite' writing.

I picked up a Transcend 8gig class 6 thats 19MB/sec Read; 13MB/sec Write for less than $25.00 and a new XSI.

I used the Transcend brand before when I bought the 4g CF card for my XTI, had no problems in 18 months I been using it.

Just that most brands does not list the read and write speeds and was unsure that the class 6 meant as it say min 6megs read and write.

I have a SanDisk Extreme 2GB SD card, and observed the following. I have seen this with at least one other card as well.

While shooting my stop watch in continuous mode (I know, exciting subject), I saw that I shot about 3 fps when shooting the highest resolution jpgs.

It was only when I switched to the next-to-the-highest resolution jpgs that I observed the as-advertised 3.5 fps.

Is it expected behavior that you can only get the 3.5 fps if you dial back a bit on the jpg resolution?

That doesn't sound right. I actually did the same test (which doesn't sound exciting, but while testing the camera, seeing 3-4 photos in a row with the second hand on the watch not moving gives one a good sense and appreciation for the continous mode).

On the rare occassion that I use this mode, I make sure to turn off the auto lighting optimizer and dynamic range extender (forget exact names, as I never turn them on). Also, the shutterspeed should be at a reasonable amount, and most importantly, and I'm guessing could be your problem, high ISO noise reduction should be off. Even if you're below ISO 800, enabling this slows down your burst rate, atleast for my camera.

I've been using a Transcend 8G Class 6 card for about 6 months now and it's worked out for me so far.
