Interested in how people would answer this.

would it be the optimum focal length .... would it be a cpromise FL .... would it be the sheer beauty of it ....

So for me although i would miss portraits .. i have thought .. ok .. you have one SLR ... no other camera and just one lens for a 2 year period ...

There ..

So under these criteria ....

A. What single lens from past and presnt lenses

B. What single lens would replace it if Pentax made it . Remember that lens if chosen would replace the former and not be added to it.

So for me

A. DA21/3.2

B. DA*18/1.8

At the moment I am mainly taking landscapes .... light is nice but not essential

I would prefer as a single landscape lens I think an 18 . In the UK weathersealing would be great. A wider aperture welcome but 2.5 would suffice if it reduced costs / size considerably. But there is a lot you'd miss!!!

Anyone play?

I use to have a Yashica T4 with a fixed 35/3.5 lens that I use to carry with me all the time. I got quite comfortable with it's focal length.

So to answer your question, a 21mm focal length on a cropped sensor camera would be the best single focal length for me.

I guess I can only pick from the lenses I own since those the only lenses I have ever used, so.......

the Sigma 28mm f/1.8.

That gives me a fast 42mm lens with a decent macro range. I could live with that.

I used to carry a film pocket camera with a 35mm f/2.8 lens. It was one of those Olympus cameras with a slide on the front. I found it very useful for travel, and, if one didn't get too close, for informal portraits and snaps as well. 35mm lenses were very popular back in the days before zooms and I also carried an f/3.5 quite often on my first MX. And on the other I usually had a 50mm f1.4.

I guess that would be 21 or 22mm in APS format, and 34 or 35mm, respectively. Hmm, so that's why the DA21 and DA35 are so popular.

A. FA31/1.8 limited (though sometimes I prefer the FA43/1.9, depends on my mood)
B. DA*30/1.4

Well... the latter will come, not sure that's according to the rules you set? If you require an alternative that's not announced/rumoured my preference for B. would be a DA28/2 limited (for its smaller size compared to the DA*30/1.4)...

I would just wait out the two years, then cry like a baby to be reunited with my Bigma! Shooting without a zoom is like sex without a woman.....is it possible? Sure but it is not for me. Good luck to you, you would be a very frustrated boy indeed!

Rupert you can invent one lens ... but that would be the only one ... so ? telephoto ..... ? 200 / 300 or the mythical 500 ???

but then nothing else!!!

So Tom that would mean you have the DA55Macro but not the Sigma 100 macro ... its a tough choice but if you choose a B you have to let the A go!!!

i am very bossy!!!

Have not got tired of macro yet. Therefore, I will forgo my A200 macro f4(a little heavy) and vivitar 105 macro together with all other macros lenses.

I will hold on to voigtlander macro(lighter when compare to A200), and beautiful optics.
