I would think an internet search would reveal several books. A post on this forum some weeks ago looked at the books available. One poster said he had 3 books, one of which was the expensive Friedman book, but he rated the much cheaper Sony A700 Digital Field Guide by Alan Hess more highly. So I bought one. It’s very cheap (£7 from Amazon) and of good print quality. However, I am a bit disappointed with the contents.
Half covers the same ground as the Sony guide, which is fair enough. However, it misses the opportunity to explain in depth what the pros and cons are of the numerous alternative settings in the camera’s menus. (For example, if you set the MF/AF to toggle on-off it is very easy to inadvertently change the setting from AF to MF when handling the camera normally; you only discover when you try to AF and find the shutter is locked.) He also fails to provide any sort of critical review of the lenses available. As an example here he mentions the 2 Sony macro lenses that are available but fails to explain the pros and cons of their different focal lengths. His sections on photographic tips are reasonably good but their usefulness depends on the reader’s level of experience.
So altogether, it’s good value for its cheap price but the author IMO missed out on making a reasonable book truly excellent.
