Don't ask me why I did this.. but I was bored tonite and went to the local grocery store at 1am to get a few things.. being the photographer I am, i brought along my d30 w/ my trusty 50mm f/1.4. Its amazing how interesting things can be when u'r tired as hell..

There are beautiful flowers to be found inside Safeway!

if a thread isn't about which lens to buy or about how bad the D30/60's AF is, then its not worth talking about. What ever happened to the casual talk that used to be on here?

Its turned into a buyers forum I swear...

Your pictures are good examples of creative subject hunting. One of the first things that attracted me to photography many years ago were detail photos. They showed how there are so many beautiful patterns and textures in everyday life that we overlook as we walk around but that really can grab you when isolated by a skilled photographer.

Love the soup cans, I would have stopped down a little for a bit more depth of field (not too much, though). Nice work. Keep posting.

Cool pictures. But I'm surprised you weren't thrown out. For reasons which totally escape me, grocery stores are unbelievably paranoid about photography inside the store.

True.. but there was NO one in the store except my friend (who was shopping) and myself. The two checkers were too busy bs'ing up front to care what we were doing.

The trick is to do it between about 1 and 5am when the people that don't care are working.

I used to work 4-12pm years ago, go to the nearby grocery store betwee 1-2am for my weekly shopping. It was like you, and the guy at the checkout. Run to the back and sprint and jump on your cart, no one cared.

Most large companies have a blanket "no pictures" policy in places where people are working. The reason for this, according to most public information guys I've worked for, (on assignment) is the fear that, somewhere down the line OSHA might trip over one of your shots and find some nit to pick, either in the shot itself, or in the background.

I've heard some horror stories from these same people about OSHA hacks scrutinizing all manner of advertising and other printed matter for violations.

Since OSHA regs range from reasonable to ridiculous to downright dangerous, not all are followed to the letter, particularly the many that make no sense.

OSHA assaults are very expensive to fend off, so many companies adopt the universal "no pictures" policy simply for their own protection against our tax dollars at work.

That said, if you want to shoot for enjoyment in such places, it's much better to apologize later than to aks permission and get a bureaucratic "NO". :-)

I know I was asleep at the time of the post, and by the time I checked the forum in the morning, it was already on page 2! :)

At such early hours, you could go in with a tripod and get photos of yourself posing naked with the milk products and I don't think any of the employees will care.

Cool pictures, BTW.

Ozy was talking negatively about just the type of thread you started about the 28-135. And you agree with him? So do I.

But Ozy, you can visit the samples and galleries and see lots of good stuff and great discussion about somethng other than lenses (Lee?) or autofocus. Or we could start a thread about a really controversial topic in open talk, if you like. ;)
