50D Australian Pricing

It'll be $1500 or less by January. The initial prices won't hold up
for long.
I think your right. Canon have some new models arriving that will surely drive the price of the 50D down even more.

Im pretty happy with my 40D though, to be honest :-)

Hi All

I just checked Ted's website again (www.teds.com.au) and the 50D
enthusiast kit with 17-85mm IS lens is now listing for $2399 - this
is $600 less than last week.

They ether made a mistake last week, or Canon have had a rethink now
that the D90 has been announced. Goods news, regardless of the reason!
Hi Dean. Yes, $3000 sounds uncompetitive, as that would put the 50D body at well over $2000.
Just speculating, but that would suggest that the 50D body will be
about AU$1600 at most.
Your pricing conclusions seem a bit optimistic, especially for a 50D with Canon Aust warranty.

From Ted's website, the 40D is $1400, 40D + 17-85 enth kit is $2000, and 17-85 is $900 on its own. The lens makes up $600 of the kit price.

From the Quality Camera Sales website, the 40D is $1350, 40D + 17-85 enth kit is $2000 and 17-85 on its own is $800. The lens makes up $650 of the kit price.

The 450D kit 17-85 lens component is $750.

Let's say the lens component in the 50D enth kit with 17-85 is $700. That would make the body $2400 - $700 = $1700. I wouldn't expect regular prices to be any cheaper than that for a 50D body with Canon Aust warranty, at least initially. They shouldn't be much more, perhaps $1750 (or $1800 at the outside).

Even if 50D body prices come down by early next year, I wouldn't expect $1500 for those with Aust warranty. AFAIK, there hasn't been any precedent for that kind of pricing so quickly with the 30D/40D, despite credible competition from Nikon in the past.

Direct imports are a different matter and of course those prices are expected to be better than Canon Aust warranty bodies. However, our sliding dollar may narrow the gap a little there, or may affect Canon Aust imports and direct imports equally. Who knows? Canon import prices would probably take longer to change.

FWIW, while my 40Ds are great cameras, the 50D has enough going for it, at least on paper, to justify an upgrade for my purposes.

The much anticipated 5D successor will also throw an interesting element into the mix, but that upgrade would be harder to justify (and fund).

is what I would expect initially, then down to $1500-1600 within a couple of months pending on what Nikon and others do in this market segment.

like you I have already a 5D and a replacement would have to be quite an evolution to justify the $3500 or so likely to cost here in Oz, so a 50D is looking tempting!

I have purchased from digital discounts, they are fantastic delivery and packaging.

I will be buying from them,

Im gonna wait a few weeks, but reckon it will enter at $2K and drop to 1.7K quickly.

Im getting one, currently selling on e bay my 2nd body 40D,

also adding a tamron 17-50 2.8 to it as well.

Hi Gustavo. You're making sense. $1750-$1800 initially for a 50D, then maybe down to $1600 within a few months, but I think $1500 is on the low side until well into 2009, even with pressure form Nikon (and Sony as it continues to make its presence felt).

I don't have a 5D. I've borrowed one a couple of times, but never owned one. For that reason, the 5D successor might be more compelling for me as my 2nd 40D upgrade (after my 1st 40D upgrade to 50D) than it would be for you.

body only $1990 at Camera House

Nikon D90 is $1550 for body, so again Canon Aust aiming high??

Gustavo, with the D90 is in a different market segment, wouldn't you expect the 50D to cost more? That said, the D90 720p video will be compelling for some people, but not for others, including those with enough investment in Canon lenses, flashguns, etc.

Competition and innovation are good for consumers.

My earlier guess was $1500 body-only. Sorry I didn't make that clear. I have all the lenses I need so not looking for a kit.

The 50D for me will purely be a replacement for the 40D which will be sold. It will then serve as my backup camera for the new 5D. I've been waiting 2 years to upgrade to a FF camera for weddings, but the 5D was just too feature-poor to justify the cost. The new one should have everything I need and more.

Of course if Canon also releases a "revolutionary" 3D alongside the new 5D, and prices it under $4000, the combination of 7D and 3D could be too good to resist :)

Was $1990 a quote from Camera House or do they have it listed on one of their web sites? I have been unable to get a firm price from any dealer.

Hi John,

when the D70 series II and then D80 came out they were also priced initially body only at around $1700-1800, just a little under the xxD Canon of the day, but only about $100 difference or so.

So while $2K is about where I would have though Canon could be (upper end), I am surprised at Nikon being $400 below.

The 50D sits somewhere between the D90 and D300, it's got a bit more resolution that the D90, but a lot less features than the D300, other than sensor resolution (no body seals, lesser AF system etc). So the price being in the middle between the two Nikons is optimistic, and for my own greedy benefit, I hope this puts downward pressure on the Canon ;-).

Yes, let's hope.

Yes, it's an interesting period coming up, with Canon guaranteed to make some big announcements.
