It'll be $1500 or less by January. The initial prices won't hold up for long.

I think your right. Canon have some new models arriving that will surely drive the price of the 50D down even more. It'll be $1500 or less by January. The initial prices won't hold up

Hi Dean. Yes, $3000 sounds uncompetitive, as that would put the 50D body at well over $2000.Hi All
I just checked Ted's website again (www.teds.com.au) and the 50D
enthusiast kit with 17-85mm IS lens is now listing for $2399 - this
is $600 less than last week.
They ether made a mistake last week, or Canon have had a rethink now
that the D90 has been announced. Goods news, regardless of the reason!
Your pricing conclusions seem a bit optimistic, especially for a 50D with Canon Aust warranty.Just speculating, but that would suggest that the 50D body will be
about AU$1600 at most.
Hi Gustavo. You're making sense. $1750-$1800 initially for a 50D, then maybe down to $1600 within a few months, but I think $1500 is on the low side until well into 2009, even with pressure form Nikon (and Sony as it continues to make its presence felt).is what I would expect initially, then down to $1500-1600 within a
couple of months pending on what Nikon and others do in this market
segment.
like you I have already a 5D and a replacement would have to be quite
an evolution to justify the $3500 or so likely to cost here in Oz, so
a 50D is looking tempting!

Gustavo, with the D90 is in a different market segment, wouldn't you expect the 50D to cost more? That said, the D90 720p video will be compelling for some people, but not for others, including those with enough investment in Canon lenses, flashguns, etc.body only $1990 at Camera House
Nikon D90 is $1550 for body, so again Canon Aust aiming high??

Yes, let's hope.Hi John,
when the D70 series II and then D80 came out they were also priced
initially body only at around $1700-1800, just a little under the xxD
Canon of the day, but only about $100 difference or so.
So while $2K is about where I would have though Canon could be (upper
end), I am surprised at Nikon being $400 below.
The 50D sits somewhere between the D90 and D300, it's got a bit more
resolution that the D90, but a lot less features than the D300, other
than sensor resolution (no body seals, lesser AF system etc). So the
price being in the middle between the two Nikons is optimistic, and
for my own greedy benefit, I hope this puts downward pressure on the
Canon ;-).
Yes, it's an interesting period coming up, with Canon guaranteed to make some big announcements. My earlier guess was $1500 body-only. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
I have all the lenses I need so not looking for a kit.
The 50D for me will purely be a replacement for the 40D which will be
sold. It will then serve as my backup camera for the new 5D. I've
been waiting 2 years to upgrade to a FF camera for weddings, but the
5D was just too feature-poor to justify the cost. The new one should
have everything I need and more.
Of course if Canon also releases a "revolutionary" 3D alongside the
new 5D, and prices it under $4000, the combination of 7D and 3D could
be too good to resist![]()
