D90 video sample

Liked the focus effect, but it looks like the exposure changed dramatically as the camera panned past different subjects.

The preview says exposure is "fully automatic" in movie mode, and that might be the Achilles heel of video on the D90. Generally, you don't want uncontrolled changes in exposure while shooting video. It would be nice to be able to do manual exposure.

there is available exposure comp which is helpful. i wonder about the quality of the sound, tho.

That web page withthe examples says

"Autofocus is not available when recording movies. Matrix metering is used regardless of the metering method selected."

Not many camcorders can brag with this good manual focus control though.

Prefer manual focus over autofocus anytime, in videomode. As do pro filmers.

Oh yah. I'm sure a guy with a D90 is going to bring a separate professional focus puller along with him wherever he goes. LOL

A relatively simple, affordable, high quality DSLR with 720P video. Love it! :)

Glad I didn't buy one of those HD camcorders with the puny sensors and high noise in low light. I came so close to buying a Sony HDR SR11 recently. Now I can get seriously HQ still photos and HD video in the same package. For less $$ than that Sony camcorder.

But wouldn't it have been cool if the D700 had offered this feature?

Maybe the D3X or whatever could have 1080P video. Even higher vid quality with a larger sensor perhaps.

But how many 5 minute clips can this, the D90 store on a 2-4Gb SDHC card I wonder? Or how many clips per battery charge?

720p using MJPEG compression? Those movies are going to be ginormous.

I'm still so buying one of these once I've got the dough.

Hi All!

I am very interested in the D90's 720p function, but I am a bit concerned I can't find the bitrate anywhere. If it is something like 15-20mbit/sec all well and good, but I am concerned it might be something very low - if so there will be lots of compression artifacts and it probably will not look very good on a HDTV!

Has anyone seen it anywhere?!

Thanks,
Rob

All we have is this from dpreview:

"We've had a play with this function on our pre-production camera though we're not able to publish any output yet we can report that the quality of the 720p movie clips seems very good - we'll cover this in-depth when we publish our full review."

I've been using a Canon HV20 and a 35mm lens adapter and the footage shown is at least as good. With all 35mm lens adapters there is no auto focus and actually no one shooting video with 35mm lenses would think about using auto focus (they pull focus) - so for most people into video this is not a big deal.

Sound obviously is a problem but there are external recorders and software these days is very good at syncing audio to video.

A good 35mm lens adapter like the Brevis or Letus costs a lot of money and I'm going to be selling mine to buy the D90 unless the new Canon 5D has a movie mode.

Advantages of the D90 in movie mode are 1. great ISO and noise reduction - a big problem when shooting movies indoors with 35m adapters. 2. Ease of use and portability. 3. memory storage and transfer.

I'm glad to see someone in a similar situation. I also have an HV20, and had been saving for a lens adapter. Instead I've got the HV20 up for sale on Ebay. At first I was confused by all the people against the movie mode, but now I'm hoping there's enough of them to keep the D90 out of supply problems.
