I now have an Advent micro laptop to use as image backup when away. I do not think it has 'power' to edit images but I'd like a RAW viewer. Device runs under WinXP and has 1GB RAM plus 80GB HD
Sony vital (I use Sony A700)
Canon important (20, 30 and 5Ds)
Nikon very nice to have (D50 - D80.. maybe D700 in future).

Any ideas?

Free RAW Threrapee
LightRoom 2
Bibble 4.1
ACDSee Pro 2
Capture One 4.1

All of these do A700 files and each has strengths and weaknesses.

(Happy A700 owner who hasn't sold the 5D yet hmm?)
See my stuff at http://www.cascadephotoworks.com
Read the detailed reviews at http://www.dpreview.com
Then read great Sony user info at: http://www.photoclubalpha.com

I'd use dcraw. Minimal footprint but gives you viewable files and/or will extract embedded jpegs from raws. Almost every camera under the sun supported. Use a batch file to add dcraw to the "sendto" right-click menu in Explorer so you do not have to deal with DOS.

Agreed... but my little box has so little processing power.. LR will not go, C1 fails, I need to try RawTherapee...

Fastone decidedly clunky (at least with Sony RAWs)
In what way do you mean it is clunky? I use FastStone to view all my
Sony raw files (A700, A100), Canon raw files (30D), and lots of jpeg
and tiff files. Works fine for me.
Hi Henry

Often, when click on a (Sony) ARW RAW it pauses/hangs for anything up to 2mins. Sometimes then totally fails, sometimes picks up. Often fails to render image; sometimes corrupts image (ie view not file).
Perhaps 50% time works OK.. other times this kind of 'clunky' behaviour.
Shame...

Irfanview will do it fine, and it's free.
You need to download the raw codec from the same site
You're right... But have to open via 'all files' as do not show up in 'common graphics files'.

If FastStone remains as clunky as I've had previously (on my powerful desktop) looks liker Irfanview will do it.
Many thanks

Hmm, it doesn't do that for me. It displays the raw file almost immediately. I have the RAW setting set to:

View RAW files in: Embedded Preview Image (Fastest)

What version are you using? I am using 3.5.

What's the advantage of using one of these third party viewers over the Windows viewer ?

Yes, viewing NEF as embedded preview image is instantaneous over here on my ancient box. Even setting RAW settings to viewing RAW @ 1/2 size is only an 1-2 sec lag b4 my D80 NEF images fly up on the screen.
LesP, try resetting your settings in FS and see what happens.
Regards, Jim

I do use the NEF dnload to allow viewing folder contents in Vista, but also use Irfanview to sort and crop images for quick use on websites.

I used CS2 on a Pentium 4 with XP and 1GB of ram. Never had any problems.

XP usually works great with 1GB.

Hi Guys, especially Henry

Yup, loaded FastStone onto laptot and heh! great. Appears to work AOK. Still need to load more than 40 images into a folder (and try Canikons - but I assume they'll be OK!).

One day I'll retry on powerful desktop and try to figure why previous problems. In meantime, best little (practical) toy I've had (after 700!)
