A very poor effert by canon

I would have to say the new 18-200 from canon is a very poor effert. no usm looks fairly chaep but thats hard to judge right now but seriously no USM. what where they thinking???

• only 6 blades in aperture design
• no USM
• no "lock" feature (see 70-300 IS)
• was not available in 20D times

Poor effort indeed we see but in 50D body! MPx has changed from 10 to 15 but AF is still the same...

really, canon dropped the ball a long time ago on this one. and they tried to compensate by first coming out with a new kit lens and a 55-250 efs zoom, both of which have plastic mounts.

and now finally (after sigma) canon comes out with there own 18-200 stabilized superzoom.

whoever was in charge of these decisions should have his a** canned .

Seems to me an obvious gameof "catch up". Of course, Nikon still has a huge gap in affordable VR telephotos comapred to Canon, so it equals out.

the people that are going to buy that lens are not going to care about USM probably because non of their current lenses will have it.

This lens will suit my dad who just wants one lens to save space and wants a DSLR for higher quality images than you get with a point and click. My dad takes nice snap shots of holidays, my son and general stuff. Thats what this lens is aimed at not people on forums that moan

That was sigma. This lens is aimed at getting back in the game and not losing any more market share. Canon have been forced to do this lens (just like they will give in-body IS eventually)

they were thinking of the particular market for such a lens - not exactly the "high end" photographer in the majority of cases.

you just need to read the number of threads started by folks looking for the one lens to get for "walk around" use on their Rebel or X0D body to understand the appeal of this lens to them. (One factor that disappoints them as they consider moving to a DSLR is that the available entry level lenses don't cover the same zoom range that they can cover with their current P&S camera.)

A lot of people are complaining about the 18-200mm. When Canon starts to sell it I guess it will be available in big numbers in one year...because everybody wants to have one...oh and if someone has one and don´t likes it...he can sell it with a big gain at ebay...

All this happened to the Nikkor 18-200mm VR.

And even if this lens hasn´t USM...I think the AF will still be better than this one from the Tamron 18-270mm. Tamron never had good AF...they still don´t have an USM lens.

I'm not so sure about this. In Nikon camp - myself included -, the 18-200 (wich btw is an expensive lens and not particularly designed as a kit lens), is used by almost everyone, from occasional weekend snapshooter to advanced amateurs and even pro's (just take a look at the nikon forums: this lens is widely used by everyone, from D40 to D300 and D2 users). The purpose was to offer the best possible quality in a super zoom that would stand as a one lens, lightweight alternative to the usual 2 -3 separate lens setup. And it was- still is - a success: even the most snobist amteurs and pro's recognised that the lens was an optical wonder for its focal range and the performance regarding focus was on par with other mid to high range zooms. Trouble is that this lens for the Canon camp should have appeared 3 years ago: nowadays, with the likely affordability of FF cameras in the very near future there is not much sense in investing too much in a lens that will probably be destined to the entry level range in little more than one year - and remember that unlike Nikon, there's no body compatibility between crop and FF lens. But obviously, until the arrival of such bodies, Canon will charge as much as possible for this lens.
