I have PS CS2 and would like like to automate the downsizing of images. I know how to create and run actions, but can't find a way to do the following:
  • Automatically downsize all the image files in a folder to predetermined maximum width and height (Automate/Fit Image will do that), sharpen it (USM), convert it to 8-bit. All tha tis no problem.
  • Save as JPG files with predetermined compression to a newly-created folder that is (1) a predetermined name and (2) underneath the folder the original files are in.
That last step (2) is the kicker for me. When I create the new folder during the Save As, it's recorded in the action as an absolute location, not a folder name underneath whatever folder the images happen to be in. Is there any way to record that "save as" folder as a relative location?

Now, what I really want is a series of the above, each one for a different (predetermined) max image size and different (predetermined) relative folder name for the Save As.

Do you think I can accomplish this?

I only have PS CS3 so not sure about CS2, but i imagine it would. I'm at work so going from memory but i think its under SCRIPTS dialogue, which is in image> image processor. Essentially you point the script to a folder of pics and it will batch convert to a folder of you choice as TIFF, JPG, DNG at any size you specify. Its's really useful as it also allows you to apply actions in the process too. I usually get it to downsize a whole heap of RAW files to small JPG including a sharpening action. Sorry to be vague on where the dialogue is contained, google image processor / script. I believe in previous versions of PS it was called Dr Brown's image processor or something

Scroll down to CS2 tips, downloadd 1-2-3 image processor..
another method is to use Fastone Image Resizer, I like both.

Thanks. Image Processor in CS2 is in File/Scripts/Image Processor. In a brief test, it puts the processed files in a JPG folder under the one you specify for output, which is not what I want. I'll look at it again when I have more time, and will also try the Dr. Brown thing.
