Anyone have thoughts on using it for outdoor sports? On a 30D? Thanks.

I use this lens with my 40D for outdoor shorts and we just have to learn to work with its limitations of non-USM. As much as I love to spend a thousand (which I don't have) for an L lens, I guess, this one does an OK job for $275.

but I have used it for BIF and fast moving animals. You won't get 100% keepers due to the focus being slower, but even on my 350D I usually come away with a good number of keepers. It's hard to beat for $270, but if you spend more you could do better.

I almost bought this lens, but decided to forego the IS for ringUSM and got an older 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5 for under $200 in ebay.... (had to wait for it as there are not many for sale out there). I usually shoot in decent light so it was the right choice for me and with the 40D, I'm loving the blazing speed of the combo....

It should a good lens under good daylights. Especially many ballparks have restriction of size of lens you can bring in. None of the L lenses will be permitted.

this was taken yesterday ,at times it was overcast. shot @ 250mm .. I'm satisfied with the lense .. it was on my 40d .. I left the 30d home
