Hi all, I have been the fortunate owner of the fabulous c-740. It has, up until recently performed unwaveringly. Suddenly last week, after turning it on, I took one photo, and the camera went dead, the lens remained extended. I pressed the on button. It made the usual turning on noise, and was on again. The battery indicator showed green. I replaced them anyway. I took about three photos, and it repeated the same problem. At other times, whilst on, I have tried to turn it off, and the camera dies, leaving the lens extended. If I have it on and activate the flash release, the camera dies. The battery indicator shows green when I turn it on, and suddenly goes into red flash mode. Pressing Quick View to display the LCD screen doesn't trigger the shut down.

The camera store quoted $60 just to look at it, and then a possible $100 to $200 to maybe fix. I really really like this camera and am loathe to put it in the bin. I know its relatively old, but would like to hang on to it. Has anyone else had this problem? Any ideas? If it is time to say goodbye to it, I'd appreciate suggestions for a replacement. Thanks in advance, Vic

I have the 740 also ..but havent had that problem ..but after 3 yrs of constant use the capasitor went luckily it was still under warranty so i had it fixed ... i loved the camera and have taken many great pics .. my sig pic is one taken from that camera ..

I would suggest maybe leaveing th battery out for a while and see what happens .. if it is out long enough you may have to reset all the settings ..

If you are in the US it would be cheaper just to replace the camera then repair it .. if you really want that camera .. for suggesting another . i wouldnt have any idea .. I have an E-1 and love it .. couldnt be happier .. :)

This behaviour is typical of a low battery - I had the C-750 for four years. If it does that with freshly charged batteries, there is probably a fault.

The fault could be moisture in the camera. So in addition to taking the batteries out for a while, keep it in a dry place as well.

If you think of replacing it, I personally would not go for another C-740 or even a C-750. Extending the lens not only pulls in moisture, this action also pulls in dust. I say this having four years worth of C-750 galleries on pbase.

The C-740 and C-750 are more susceptable to environmental conditions than my recent SP-550UZ and SP-570UZ. Both these give me plenty of warning of any low batteries, so I can turn off the camera, rather than have to walk to the nearest place where batteries are available with a fully extended lens. this has happened to me. The replacement batteries had not been charged as recently as I believed.

Although the SP-550 and SP-570 are not advertised as being weather-resistant - on May 1st I was able to complete a movie as a rain squall drenched us. My SP-550 never faltered before I turned it off and put it back into the weather-resistant pouch..

Thanks for your replies. it definitely isn't a battery issue. One of the first things I checked. I have come across a reset procedure in another thread, so I'll try that, and if that doesn't work, it becomes a paperweight. Cheers, Vic (Australia)

Hi from Sydney, Vic

This might sound like a silly question, but are all of the battery compartment contacts clean? It doesn't take much corrosion over the years to cause problems like this. Maybe giving all of them a bit of a scrape with a screwdriver tip or sandpaper will alleviate the problem.

I hope that's all the problem is. I'm still using my C-740 and I don't plan to stop, even if I get a DSLR.
Good luck mate.
