OH! Phil takes a low blow at Oly forum folks

I missed this when it was posted a few days back. I rarely bother with the open talk forum anymore. It's a cesspool of trolls, fanboys, and various other annoyances that make me want to just stop visiting dpreview. In fact, it makes me nostalgic for film.

In a nutshell, one of the guys who patrols the open talk forum for anti-Canon dissent started a thread inquiring what has become of all the dpreview critics now that dpreview is actually reviewing equipment.

Ok...it is kind of funny, but (just) not as funny as their (still) lame review endings (with reservations).

There are some biased rants on this forum.

On the other hand, Phil Askey's response to Oly's (bewilderingly inept) non-supply of a camera at the E3 launch was pretty childish too.

Phil's post on the open talk forum is unimportant. But his reviews are worth reading (if not always the conclusion). So are many of the posts on this forum.

Let's stay with the constructive (praise or criticism) and ignore the rest.

Actually, I think Olympus gets reviewed fairly here with
every wart thoroughy examined and criticised.

Problem is that, in canikon reviews, similar imperfections
are glossed over or excused as "unimportant" or "irrelevant"
to most shooters. There would be little to complain about
if there was more consistency. There's a bias here but
it is so ingrained that I don't think Phil & the gang are aware
of it...or maybe they are and don't care after the way Oly has
slighted them in the past.

Just a part of the ongoing, juvenile grudge DPR has with Oly and
we get dragged along like it or not..

A refuse to review bodys because it's not sold in ONE of the markets that use his site. (e 400)

B call a camera that brings a new feature to market a solution looking for a problem but give kudos to a non oly brand for the same features years down the road.

C get all pissy because he didn't get his body to review before the release only to not review it at all or bash it for something stupid. (it looks funny)
D refuse to allow us to link to sites that WILL review those cameras fairly.

E just have to get that little dig in by giving the ( ) listing. How many other bodies get a listing like that.

Phil loves to treat the Oly forums like step children. While other brands get individule forums for the different models, we are lucky to have the header even include the models we are talking about at the moment. How many years did that take?

That said, I'm glad DP is here and that I get to interact with all of the members here. For this I am thankful to Phil. (just)

Probably true, but it's a pity Oly fed the grudge at the E3 launch.

This world is full of fragile egos, it's a fact the more stable of us (?) have to allow for and work round. Olympus didn't, and made either a miscalculation (that dpreview is anti Oly, therefore less important than other sites and mags) or an incomprehensible mistake.

Whichever, Oly have surely paid for it, which is a pity.

While innacuracies and and slanted views should be pointed out, I feel strongly that we should avoid personal abuse against Phil Askey, however mild.

It can only ratchet up the existing prejudice against Oly and Oly users, while serving no constructive purpose.

Oh I don't know - he is the editor of this site, he ought to be neutral and unbiased, he posted a message essentially disparaging a chunk of his own readership - granted they don't pay him so he doesn't give a toss. "Oly users" are just people who use Olympus cameras, and a lot of those reading this forum, don't actually care about Olympus, DPR or Phil Askey so his gibe was just completely uncalled for. So why shouldn't it be pointed out that he is an unprofessional little arseclown. The forums are full of rubbish without him adding to it.

Very possibly, but it doesn't matter because we don't have to (and if we did, we'd have to make the best of it anyway). So while understanding how you feel, this isn't worth saying.

There are things I cannot help but get upset about. Phil Askey's attitude to Oly users isn't one of them.

Phil showed a bias against Oly for a while now. Doing so probably pushes one down on the list of people that need to review a new body first.
Then again, why rush him a camera just so he can slag it again.

Maybe he should start his reviews ... I don't really like Olympus but here goes anyways.
