I received this lens in the mail today and there isn't a manual focus override switch. Does this make sense? The manual has a reference to this switch in the camera schematic. I bought the lens from buy.com.

With HSM lenses, you can always override auto focus at any time - us AF, then turn the focus ring to refine focus. That's probably what the manual was referring to.

Having a look at one now on a Nikon. Even though the manual says it has a Manual switch, it does not.

You have to switch off the autofocus in camera otherwise the camera will still autofocus even if you hold the focus ring.

I'd love to hear otherwise.

You're completely correct!

Whether or not the lens has an AF/MF switch on the lens barrel depends on the mount version you are looking at. For instance, Canon and Sigma versions will have a switch on the lens while the Nikon version hasn't.

If the lens is in AF-mode, it will try to focus even if you grab hold of the focus ring, which of course is no problem since the HSM motor (just like Canon's USM) allows full time manual override of the AF. Just make sure you don't try that with a conventionally driven AF lens...
