I have, over time, refused to send any more money to Micro$oft than necessary for their OS upgrades. Consequently, I am still running Win 98 (not SE or ME) on an Athlon 1.4G based machine. I downloaded the View software w/o checking OS compatibilities. This software will not install on Win 98.

This is just to warn those who are still running this tired, old OS. Don't waste your time with the D/L.

.. period.

Did not pass my scrutiny, and my old bug with this SW – which I use only for the Firewire – is still in the new version – that’s the inability to make new folders on the fly but worse – I must first transfer all my card data – silly SW IMO.

You would not want it anyway, I think.

These are some of the same irritations I've experienced. Also, if you check the "read-me" that comes with the SW, the "known" bug list is still long, including:

a) Nikon View may not display thumbnail images in the proper direction after those images had been rotated using third party application software. (such as Photoshop version 6).

b) Displaying a large number of images in the Browser:If you try to display more than 150 images in the Browser, some of the image thumbnails may not be displayed.

I routinely D/L 150+ shots. Plus, there are 6 known errors with slideshow. Good thing it's free!

Although I don't use NV (for anything), I will comment that I held on to 98SE for a long time as well. I just went to XP, and and much as I hate to admit that Microsoft did well, I have been amazed by the improved stability and performance compared to 98SE.

The HP support guy who helped me fix a printer problem told me that 98SE wasn't even using the whole RAM (it supposedly won't use over 128Mb), but in any case it is significantly faster and much more reliable. I recommend you consider it as a worthwhile upgrade.

Note that Bibble does have some problems with XP, but the 3.0 upgrade due "any day" is promised to fix that.

Hope that helps,
Dave

Thanks, David. I do run XP on my daughter's machine, at her request. It is fast and stable. However, that $99 upgrade cost me a new video card (Voodoo 5500 not "fully" supported), a sound card, and a lot of time debugging and trying to get the machine to once again talk to my network. I think I will wait the customary 8-12 months for MS to release their first service pack, as well as letting everyone catch up on drivers!
