Post an image you are proud of - Part 2 ...

Wow, that eye is awesome. Great detail in the eye.
Ted
One of my first with s100fs.

I'm quite pleased with this one because of the effects on the water
like oil and because without monpod/tripod i succeeded in getting
enough sharp to be useable at this low speed (big thanks to
stabilization).

I agree that i must redo the RAW conversion, need to work on noise
and improve contrast and reduc highlights and so on .. totally agree
with that but i like it anyway as a first try.

s100fs, 1/30e, f4, iso200, 35.2mm, DOR auto, mode macro.

Two awesome shots jeff, I like the first one best but both are excellant images.
Ted
Here are a couple of images I'm proud of. Both happened by accident.

1. After driving all afternoon looking for photo-op, I gave up and
started heading home. It was a muggy day and the sun turned into a
huge orange as it was setting. This shot is my favorite of a few I
shot.

2. Went with my wife to Grand Bend (Ontario). It's considered the
sunset capital of Ontario. On the way there the weather was cloudy
and rainy. As we got to the motel and started unpacking, the sky lit
up like it was on fire. I grabbed my camera and ran to the beach.

The links to bigger owl and then with details, is on my pbase gallery but i put here:

Sure the moon could be better using others hardware, you compare with not same elements. I give these two images for tony and lloydy as informals for the dcr1540pro raw capatibilites and not the best post-treament applied because that wasn't the subject.

I don't like oversharpened things because sounds not real for me, sometimes softness (or relative one) is better for feeling.

The DRC1540 Pro is a Raynox product. Written as not compatible with s100fs but i use it everyday or nearly :)

Here a gallery (still under filling) of birds using only this teleconv:

i've buy the 1540pro instead of the 2020 (and now 2025) pro because
of the resolution:
  • 340 lines/mm for 1540pro
  • 260 lines/mm for 2020pro
Well, both look reasonably sharp on the site, and you need to take magnification into account when discussing resolution. That is, if you then uprez or crop the image from the 1540 to equal the magnification of the 2020 image, things equalize somewhat ...
Looks like they are both fairly sharp ... not really a surprise.
For Tony, sure the moon is smaller but quite ok nevertheless:
Not really ... the moon is very soft. Considering you shot at 11mp and downsized, things are pretty blurry. Here is a 4mp image from a D2Hs with 300mm F4 AF-S and 1.7x teleconverter:

You should be able to achieve more crispness than this ...

and if u like birds:
I find the chest and other areas of the bird strangely soft ... the face is sharp, almost crispy. The other shots of this bird in your gallery show the same effect. Weird.

Both are taken with 1540Pro and S100FS
I suggest you have a look at long lense technique ... it is an absolute must when shooting at such long focal lengths ...

You have some excellant work in that gallery, some amazing birds, some I have never even seen before. This owl and the other shots of the same bird in your gallery seem soft in the chest, not a lot of feather detail, but very sharp in the face, maybe its just the way the bird was, they can sometimes fluff up their feathers which makes them look sharper.

Anyways you have some very sharp pics in that gallery, I really like the ones you labeled Cigogne noire (black stork). Great color and detail there for sure. What is odd is that the EXIF says you shot it at f/7.1 and 1/80 sec. this at 400mm plus the Raynox 1540 so it seems you must be using a tripod, did you choose f/7.1 for a reason? Either way thats a fine image, excellant sharpness especially at 1/80 sec and over 600mm focal length.

I also took a little time and looked at the page you linked to which compared all the teleconverters to each other using a G9, the 1540 looks like it has the best edge to edge sharpness, very nice actually. The 2020 has decent center sharpness but the 1540 is better overall and edge to edge, of course its slightly less magnification but I would trade a bit of magnification for nice edge sharpness on most days.
Take care and nice work in that gallery.

Thanks a lot Ted.

I'm currently working at this gallery, so every 2 days i fill it more.

No tripod/monopod at all but i'm very good in stopping breathing, stay still and shot without move (i use 2s clock/wait system to shot without giving move).

I choose f7.1 because after trials it appears to be the best to use with this teleconv, under f6.4 i found very soft and very little dof and after f8 i found a kind of diffraction.

Another effects of using the teleconv is that the dof is very reduced, why ? i don't know, i'm very bad in maths and optics .. but it's a fact.

Wow, hand holding at 1/80 sec and 600mm is surprising. The shot of the stork looks great but hand holding long lenses can lead to softness due to small movements. I know the camera has IS and it is aparently a very good IS. I know from my own work, if I can use a tripod over IS I will. Tripods and bird shooting don't always go well together but try it sometime and see what you get. Take one shot hand held with IS on and another on tripod with IS off. I usually find I prefer the tripod shot.
Anyways, nice stuff for sure, Ted

My first real European trip was last month and i loved it. I stayed in a hostel and met alot of nice people. I was a little nervous going by myself but after this trip i kinda just want to go back solo. I shouldn't have but already got my ticket back to Manchester for March. going to take day trips to Scotland and the Lake Districts
